The Charlotte Jewish News - September 2013 - Page 20 People are Now Moving to Lake Norman FOR the Jewish Community Continued Growth and the Addition of a Second Full-Time Jewish Professional It used to be that when a Jewish family moved to the Lake, they were moving beeause of Lake Norman or quaint towns like Davidson. The faet that there was some Jewish life was a seeondary bonus. Now, a different story is playing out in the Lake Norman region. Jews and their families are now moving for the Jewish eom- munity at Temple Kol Tikvah of Lake Norman. In the past five years. Temple Kol Tikvah has grown from 55 families and 30 ehildren in their religious sehool to nearly 200 families and more than 130 youth. The synagogue in Davidson was dedieated in April 2013 and in ad dition to a full roster of Temple Kol Tikvah programming, hosts the Lake Norman Hadassah ehap- ter, loeal seout troops, and the adult learning non-profit, David son Learns. Rabbi Shields, the first full time rabbi of the eongregation said, “Now, in addition to growth from families moving from the northeast and other parts of the United States, we are also seeing people ehoosing to move from the eity of Charlotte to Davidson and the surrounding towns beeause of our shul. A eommunity synagogue that is paving its own way is at- traetive to many, and we see fam ilies with young ehildren, retirees, and everyone in between ealling our Temple, ‘home.’ Temple Kol Tikvah and the town of Davidson ean authentieally eonsider itself a hub and seeond nueleus for vi brant Jewish life in the Greater Charlotte region.” Temple Kol Tikvah eompleted a nine month eapital eampaign for their building whieh was eapped by meeting the strietures of a ehal- lenge grant from the Leon S. Levine Foundation. In addition. Temple Kol Tikvah reeeived a programming grant from the BJH Foundation for Senior Serv- iees. Learn, Kibbitz and Nosh (LKN) will launeh in the fall. The eight monthly sessions offer an opportunity for seniors to inerease their knowledge on topies relevant to their lives, provide an informal venue for soeial interaetion, and inelude a healthy luneh. The most reeent development at Temple Kol Tikvah is the addi tion of a seeond full-time Jewish professional team. In response to reeent and projeeted growth. Tem ple Kol Tikvah hired Lynn Calnek as the Direetor of Lifelong Learn ing. She will eoordinate the reli gious sehool, b’nei mitzvah program, and partner with the Rabbi on adult edueation and fam ily programming. Ms. Calnek said the following about her new posi tion and the eongregation: “I have been involved with the eongrega tion as a member and a teaeher in the religious sehool sinee very early on its history. It is a supreme honor to assume this new role and have a hand in further shaping this eommunity as it grows.” Temple Kol Tikvah of Lake Norman is a 195 family eongrega tion loeated in Davidson, North Carolina. Interfaith eouples and Jewish families of all forms are weleome. www.templekol- tikvah.org. ^ Temple Kol Tikvah High Rosh Hashanah Eve - Wednes day, September 4 Fairview United Methodist Chureh 6 PM - Sehmooze and Nosh 6:30 PM - Children’s Serviee 7 PM - Evening Serviee Rosh Hashanah Day 1 - Thurs day, September 5 Fairview United Methodist Chureh 9:15-9:45 AM-Children’s Serviee 9:30-10:30 AM - Community Breakfast 10:30 AM-12:30 PM - Morning Serviee 1:15 PM - Tashlieh at Davidson Lake (BYOL and BYOB - Bring your own luneh and bring bread to toss) Rosh Hashanah Day 2 - Friday, September 6 Temple Kol Tikvah 10:30 AM-12 noon - Morning Serviee 71. ^ CO / O iyco L . The story goes something like this: In 2012 the newly merged Temple Kol Tikvah purehased a building in downtown Davidson to serve as the first synagogue in the Huntersville-Comelius- Davidson-Mooresville area known eolleetively as Lake Nor man. The property and renovations required $750,000 to eomplete, a seemingly unattainable goal for a eommunity who had never before held a eapital eampaign. But large goals never intimidated this emerging eongregation, and lead ers of Temple Kol Tikvah set out to raise the money through the “Conneetion Point Capital Cam paign.” The 185 families who are members of Temple Kol Tikvah started giving, and then one fam ily made an amazing ehallenge: The Leon Levine Foundation ehallenged the members to raise $675,000. In return, they would donate the final $75,000. It was an extraordinary offer and it ener gized the Jewish eommunity in Lake Norman. In less than 12 months.
