The Charlotte Jewish News -October 2013 - Page 26 Ohavim BBG By Nikole Rudent There have been so many great things happening in these past few months in Ohavim BBG. At the end of August almost all of Ohavim’s board members went to Regional Execs. We all had an amazing time learning with our fellow sisters and brothers about our board positions. It really was great to get together with all the leaders of Eastern Region. All the information that we learned will help us do amazing things for Ohavim. With that being said, Ohavim had a business meeting on September 3, the theme was fairy tales and we were all dressed up like characters from different fairy tales and movies. Tons of business was discussed, relating to great things to come in the fu ture for our chapter. There is plenty to do in the upcoming months for Ohavim. The girls are getting busy talking about com munity service, board bonding, more business meetings, and amazing programs, but most of all, keeping sisterhood alive with our B’nai B’rith girls. The Charlotte JEWISH The Charlotte Jewish News 5007 Providence Rd. #112 Charlotte, NC 23226 charlottejewiehnews^ehalomcharlotte.org Well, it’s getting to be that time of year again, boys and girls are returning to BBYO and their re spective AZA and BBG chapters in search of a fun environment for Jewish teens. Here at Hank Greenberg AZA, we are excited for a new year of energetic AITs (Alephs in training) as well as our new board. For those not yet in volved in Hank Greenberg AZA, we would like to answer some questions about this upcoming year. 1) What’s happening with Hank Greenberg this year? * Our fresh new board is ex cited to plan and organize all of our new programs which take place on Tuesday nights at the Levine JCC from 7-8:30 PM. 2) What is the chapter looking forward to this year? * Hank Greenberg is especially excited for the upcoming conven tions, such as Winter Cultural, a convention in which all AZA and BBG chapters meet at our Levine JCC. We are also excited for our AITs (new members) and their first convention, where they will meet other teens from all over Virginia and North Carolina. 3) Should I consider signing up for BBYO? What if I play an after-school sport? * Yes, Hank Greenberg AZA is always looking for new members, even if you may not be able to make it to some events, you will still form bonds with your broth ers in Hank Greenberg AZA as well have the chance at a leader ship position. 4) What should I expect from signing up for Hank Greenberg? * A lot of fun activities, chances to develop your leader ship skills, and Jewish fraternal bonding. 5) This sounds great, but where can I sign up? * At www.bbyo.org. Trust a fellow Aleph, you won’t regret it. ^ Chai Chaverim BBG The year is just now kicking off and Chai Chaverim has been busy all summer long. We had at least one of our chapter members go to almost every single summer pro gram BBYO offers and with fifteen girls from Chai Chaverim traveling to different states, even different countries, we had one of the best sum mers yet. Six of our girls - Beryl Able, Briana Bernstein, Alexa Jervis, Sophie Levinson, Sydney Schulman, and Natalie Berman - attended the Chapter Leadership Training Conference (CLTC), which is a program that taught them how to become better leaders, inside and out of BBYO. They met great people from all over the U.S. and already have plans to see their friends at BBYO’s International Convention this year in Texas. “It honestly was the greatest 12 days of my life. I loved branching out and meeting new people from all over the country,” said Sydney Schul man, who attended CLTC in June. Roni Rose and Jenna Rosen at tended the International Leader ship Training Conference (ILTC) this past summer where they learned all about BBYO’s interna tional initiatives, such as support ing global Jewry and advocating for Israel, and how they could in corporate what they learned back into our chapter. Rachel Denen- berg attended Kallah, another BBYO summer program that helped her strengthen her connec tion to Judaism. Two of our girls, Roni Rose and Sarah Fellman, went on Stand Up and Rebuild where they helped re build the communities that were affected by Hurricane Sandy. They made an impact on other people’s lives and we are so proud of them. Speaking of impact, Chai Chaverim had three girls go on a community service based summer program, called Impact. Impact Roni Rose, Rachel Denenerg, and Sydney Schulman. focuses on educating teens about how they can impact their com munity in a meaningful way. Each of Chai Chaverim’s girls went to different cities: Chicago, DC, or Boston. Lily Hader attended Im pact Boston and volunteered at a rehabilitation center called Medi cine Wheel. She helped create public art to benefit the greater Boston community. She told us, “Working at Medicine Wheel gave me the opportunity to create a relationship with people whom I never thought I could connect with. While working on public art projects, my perspective was changed on teens with drug addic tion.” Some of our girls even went to different countries. Harper Moskowitz went to Bulgaria, Avery Williams went on a Pass port trip to Europe, and Sarah Fellman went to Israel. From their stories, all of these trips sound amazing and we know they had a great time. Not only did they have fun but they also helped the com munities they were in and learned about the countries they traveled to. Although we’re sad that sum mer has come to an end and we had to leave our summer pro grams, we are looking forward to a great year in Charlotte BBYO and Chai Chaverim BBG.
