The Charlotte Jewish News -November 2013 - Page 5 Being “Out” as a Straight Ally in the Bible Belt Inclusion Shabbat at Temple Beth El, November 15-16 Temple Beth El holds an an nual Inelusion Shabbat Serviee emphasizing a variety of issues surrounding building a truly inelu- sive eommunity. Temple Beth ETs LGBT advoeaey group, the Keshet Committee ("Keshet" is Hebrew for Rainbow), sponsors this event to raise awareness and strengthen the bonds between our Second Annual Chanukah Wonderland After last year’s ex tremely sueeessful Chanukah Wonderland t t * * at the Ballantyne Jew ish Center. We are so exeited to be offering this opportunity onee again this year. Imagine a world where everything is Chanukah. From the walls to the windows, the musie, the games the food the smells and of eourse the fun. Wel- eome to Chanukah Wonderland! Chanukah Wonderland offers ehildren and adults an opportunity to enter into a festive atmosphere, where the holiday of Chanukah is not just eelebrated, but experi- eneed. Inside our funhouse, Chanukah virtually eomes alive with various unique eenters in eluding an intriguing hands-on olive press demonstration, a ere- ative erafts eorner, and a dreidel bounee house. Children are also given the opportunity to meet Yehuda the Maeeabi, build meno- rahs and dreidels in Legoland, and experienee the joys and traditions of the Holiday in our Chanukah multi-media room. Our doors will be open to the eommunity for three magieal days. The foeus of the Shabbat evening sermon will be on the importanee of allies in the fight for LGBT Civil Rights. On Saturday morning Novem ber 16, we will eonduet a Shabbat Workshop from 9-10:30 AM, looking at issues of transgender edueation and inelusion. Mareia Rogers, a eherished partieipant in Beth El life and experieneed pre senter on this topie, will share her personal story entitled, “Being T [transgendered] or the World of Tall Women and Short Men.” This workshop provides a tour of the transgender experienee, es- peeially as it impaets individuals who are transgendered, their fam ilies, and their eareers. It provides an overview of the status of trans gendered persons as eurrently de fined by the psyehiatrie, medieal, and legal eommunities. Partiei- pants will be eneouraged to ask li:j TEMPLE BETH EL the questions (there are no bad questions) they may have always wanted to ask about living as a transgendered person. The pro gram will inelude diseussion of Jewish sourees on the topie with Rabbi Judy Sehindler. Bagels and eoffee will be served.
