The Charlotte Jewish News - January 2014 - Page 2 I JEWISH FEDERATION NEWS ^Teen Coalition Presents: The Macca-Blast i t I i For the seventh night of Flanukkah, the “Teen Coalition” joined forees to ereate a very first Hanukkah program for all the teenagers in Charlotte. Could you imagine what hap pens when you take a group of 110 teens, put them in a small room, and then throw a lip-syne eompetition? One thing to be sure, this Flanukkah was even brighter than usual. At first, 10 young leaders were seleeted from Flebrew High, the JCC, and the loeal youth movements (BBYO, Lib erty, and Gesher). With the help and guidanee of the youth pro fessionals and direetors, they eame up with an extremely awe some program for their peers - a group lip-syne eompetition, fol lowed by eandle lighting eere- mony and a doughnuts fest, Hanukkah style. Upon their arrival to the event, the teens were randomly split into five groups; then they started with some fun iee-break ers to get to know one another. It was wonderful to see the Jew ish kids bonding so quiekly. After they had beeome a team, the groups started working on their number for the eompeti tion. Choosing between eontem- porary pop songs (sueh as “Royals,” “Wreeking Ball,” “Call Me Maybe,” ete.) was the easy part - eoming up with a funny and interesting perform- anee was the true ehallenge. But just before they all got on the stage for their five minutes of glory. Dor Hollander, Char lotte’s eommunity Shaliaeh, briefly introdueed the erowd to the amazing summer program to Israel - “Tikkun Olam.” This program takes plaee every sum mer in our Partnership Region of Hadera, and it offers our teens a unique and speeial opportunity: to volunteer and to help others, to explore Israel’s soeiety and eulture, and of eourse, to make friends for a lifetime - not only from Charlotte, but also from Is rael and other Jewish eommuni- ties in our partnership Shabbat Candle Lighting FOR January 2014 Friday, January 3, 5:05 PM Friday, January 10, 5:11 PM Friday, January 17, 5:18 PM Friday, January 24, 5:25 PM Friday, January 31, 5:32 PM The Charlotte Jewish News 5007 Providence Road, Suite 112 Chariotte, NC 28226 Phone (voice mail after office hours) Office 704-944-6765 FAX 704-365-4507 email: charlottejewishnews@shalomcharlotte.org An Affiliate of the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte Amy Krakovitz - Editor Advertising Sales Reps: Jodi Valenstein, 704-609-0950 or Scott Moskowitz, 704-906-2474 Art Director, Erin Bronkar, 704-847-2185, ebronkar@carolina.rr.com CJN Editorial Board Chair - Bob Davis Members: Bob Abel, Evelyn Berger, David Delfiner, Jeff Epstein, Ann Langman, Linda Levy The CJN does not assume responsibility for the quality or kasruth of any product or service advertised. After the informative presen tation, we shared a moment through a communal candle lighting ceremony - well, with an electric Hanukiyah. Subse quently, the groups started their performances one after the other. We saw five terrific and talented shows, however only one of them won the desired prize - picking their doughnuts first. Satisfied and joyful, we finished the evening with a big smile on our faces and some de licious doughnuts in our stom achs. Special thanks to Roz Cooper, Ellen Goldstein, Jessie Cohen, Ariel Krusch, and Dara Gever for all of their help in making this night come true.
