How do you quantify the bene fits of one-on-one with your peers and eolleagues? For those of us who partieipated in this year’s teaeher exehange through the Federation Partnership with Hadera-Eiron in Israel, it’s nearly impossible. Three teaehers from the Hadera region visited Charlotte for nine days in Deeember. Orly Cohen, Ruti Raz, and Neta Her- moni eame to Charlotte to both teaeh and learn (words that, in Hebrew, have the same root) but it was the rest of us who gained the most. Among the sehools they vis ited were: Charlotte Jewish Day Sehool, Temple Israel Religious Sehool, Charlotte Country Day Sehool, Hebrew High, Asheville Aeademy for Girls, Temple Beth El Religious Sehool, and Char lotte Jewish Presehool. There they either observed and/or taught lessons on Israel and Jew ish/Israeli identity, and in every ease answered many questions about their lives in Israel. In addition to teaehing our students, they were able to be tourists in our area. They visited Biltmore, had a tour of uptown Charlotte, guided by our own Moira Quinn Klein, saw the movie Jerusalem at the Diseov- ery Plaee IMAX Theatre, and visited the Museum of the New South, as well as the Luski Glass Colleetion at the Luski-Goreliek Center for Philanthropy. Their hosts for the week, Susan Soto and family, Moniea Rabinovieh and family, and my husband Jeff and me, made sure that they ate well at several area restaurants. They were able to enjoy home-eooked meals due to the kind hospitality of Debra and David Van Glish for Shab- bat, and Roz and Ivan Cooper for a Sunday night gathering. Many thanks are due also to Susan Jaeobs and Rabbi Traey Klirs, the direetors of our syna gogue religious sehools; David Lynn, direetor of International Studies at Charlotte Country Day Sehool; Dr. Loren Fauehier, direetor of Global Studies at Providenee Day Sehool; Mari- ashi Groner, direetor of CJDS; Donna deGroot, a teaeher at CJDS; Brian Tomes, exeeutive direetor of Asheville Aeademy for Girls; and Andrew Bernstein, ehair of the Partnership Steering Committe. But of eourse it was the eon- taet between Orly, Ruti, and Neta and the students that was most benefieial. Whether it was a serious diseussion of life in Is rael or a fun time making origami dreidels, everyone who met our visiting teaehers were impressed and awed at their abil ity to present a lesson, their love of their land, and their eompas- sion for all the people around them. Through the Partnership, teaehers visit our eity and we also send teaehers to visit Hadera. In addition, there is a summer trip for teens.
