The Charlotte Jewish News - February 2014 - Page 11 Youth Visions “To Everything There is a Season” For Hebrew High Students Despite eold weather and Pan ther playoffs, more than 40 He brew High 8th graders gathered for an amazing weekend of fun and learning, as they explored the Jewish Life Cyele. The group explored Jewish laws and eustoms that help guide us through the happiest and most diffieult times of our lives. Stu dents were lueky to have an out standing array of eommunity leaders help them understand these important aspeets of our eul- ture and faith. We began with Brit Milah (eir- eumsission) and baby naming rit uals. Dr. Laura Sinai spoke to the students about being a female Mohelet and the proeess she uses to adhere to the aneient ritual. After leading us in Havdalah, Cantor Mary Thomas shared ideas on the rituals of weleoming a new baby girl into the eommunity. As a new mom and elergy member, she has speeial insight into this meaningful experienee. Bar/Bat Mitzvah is the next event in a young Jewish ehild’s life. Sinee most in the group had just beeome B’nai Mitzvah, we refleeted on the personal meaning of the ritual. In addition, we did several mitzvot to benefit the res idents at the Ronald MeDonald House. We ended Saturday night with a giant L’Chaim as we learned about Jewish weddings. Ginny Freirieh brought a display of her wonderful ketubot and diseussed her art and the different texts now available for Jewish wedding eon- traets. On Sunday, we eoneentrated on the traditions assoeiated with death and dying. Brian Yesowiteh and Sandra Goldman introdueed the students to the history of our own Hebrew Cemetery. Sandra brought photos of some of the more interesting stones for the group to artistieally embellish and display. Debbie Hirseh and Corine Boekenek gave overviews of how our Chevrah Kadisha Committees prepare the deeeased for burial. For many students, this was the first time they heard about the ten der way we treat loved ones as we send them to the world to eome. They asked really thoughtful questions as they proeessed the in formation. The afternoon eoneluded with a panel diseussion about Jewish views of the afterlife. Rabbi Judy Sehindler and Rabbi Yossi Groner presented their movements teaeh- ings on this eomplieated subjeet. Hebrew High is deeply grateful to all of the amazing eommunity members and leaders who helped to make this retreat a sueeess. Your support adds tremendous support to our program. A huge thank you to the teaehers who work with our students and make sure that they are getting a won derful foundation for their Jewish lives. And, of eourse, thank you to the students whose lively attention and positive attitudes make He brew High, “The Plaee to be on Wednesday Nights” and some times on the weekend. ^ Clockwise from left: Cantor Mary conducts havadallah; celebrating the “wedding”: Corinne Boekenek and Debbie Hirseh describe the Chevra Kadisha; Dr. Laura Sinai, Mohelet; Rabbis Schindler and Groner dis cuss life after death;.
