American Hebrew Academy Awarded
the Tav HaYosher
(New York, NY) - Uri
L’Tzedek is thrilled to announee
that it has awarded the Tav
HaYosher, an ethieal seal for
kosher food establishments that
abide by state labor laws and re-
speet the pay, time, and dignity of
its workers, to the dining pavilion
at the Ameriean Hebrew Aeademy
in Greensboro, NC. The Ameri
ean Hebrew Aeademy is the only
international Jewish eollege prep
boarding sehool in the world,
serving students from 30 eoun-
tries enrolled in grades 9-12.
Uri L’Tzedek eommends their
eommitment to ereating a just en
vironment for their workers.
“Ameriean Hebrew Aeademy is a
leader in ereating just workplaees
and we are proud to work with
them to eontinue expanding
around North Ameriea. We hope
additional edueational institutions
will follow in their footsteps,”
says Steven Kraus, Exeeutive Di-
reetor of Uri L’Tzedek.
Reeent studies have revealed
widespread abuse and exploita
tion of workers aeross North
Ameriea. Thousands of workers
are paid below minimum wage.
Even more are denied their legal
rights to overtime pay and time
off Workers are often subjeeted to
unsafe and abusive working eon-
ditions. The Tav HaYosher pro
gram harnesses the eonsumer
power of the Jewish eommunity
to make soeial ehange in the food
serviee seetor.
In a letter of support for the Tav
HaYosher New York Mayor,
Miehael Bloomberg, stated, “Es-
peeially during these tough eeo-
nomie times, it is vital that
organizations like this one eon

was built.
The old building was the site of
my Bar Mitzvah in 1959 whieh
was filled with friends and rela
tives that Friday evening in May
(no serviees were held then on
Saturdays). It was the last time
my grandfather, Arthur Goodman,
a founder of the eongregation, at
tended serviees. He passed away
a month later.
The edueation building was
eonstmeted in 1955 and gave the
eongregation bright new elass-
rooms, the rabbi’s study and a li
brary. The library may have been
the most utilized room. It was the
setting for eonfirmation elasses,
board meetings, AZA on Sunday
afternoons and dozens of other
funetions. It was where Rabbi C.
Melvyn Helfgott patiently re
hearsed me for my Bar Mitzvah
week after week, always ques
tioning my reasoning for my brief
talk. I’m sure people eheeked out
the many books on the shelves,
but I never witnessed that.
But it’s probably the sanetuary
I will miss the most. Ineluding the
Friday evening I stumbled in late,
my shoelaee having broken, and
— upon entering — hearing
Rabbi Helfgott reeite from The
Union Prayer Book: “Thou shaft
portant soeial issues and train the
next generation of leaders to ad
dress the ehallenges faeed by their
eommunities.”

The Vacant Lot on Providence Road
not let my footsteps falter.”
Everyone was ready in 1992
for the move to Shalom Park to a
beautiful new building to properly
aeeommodate a fast growing eon
gregation. The Jewish Historieal
Soeiety doeumented some of the
eongregants on tape giving their
reeolleetions of the old building
that served so well for so many
years.
It wasn’t really Temple Beth El
after Dore Aeademy moved in,
and yet I found myself always
taking a glanee in that direetion
every time I passed it. All those
memories shouting at me as I
quiekly drove past day after day.
And now, just like many who
founded the eongregation and be
longed to it, the building has
turned to dust. Our eomfort in its
demise is the bright future of
Greater Gharlotte’s Jewish eom
munity—growing and prospering.
A building is but brieks and mor
tar. The old Temple Beth El was a
big step in time for the greater
blessing that is the people - the
eommunity - of today. ^
