The Charlotte Jewish News - April 2014 - Page 15 The 10th Charlotte Jewish Film Festival Impacting the Charlotte Community’s Heads, Hearts, and Funny Bone The 10th edition of the Char lotte Jewish Film Festival (CJFF) has wrapped and this annual eul- tural highlight exeeeded all ex- peetations for attendanee, and impaet. Charlotte and the sur rounding area experieneed more than 20 films that refieeted the CJFF mission to illuminate and entertain a diverse group of film lovers through the lens of the Jew ish experienee. Cinema is the most influential art form of modem times and the reaetions of the CJFF audienees, whieh totaled more than 3,500 over the eourse of the two-week event, demonstrated that infiu- enee. A teaeher from Covenant Day Sehool, Beeky Makla, spoke of her students’ reaetion after see ing 50 Children, “They were overflowing with emotion - anger at our government, sadness for ehildren unable to wave goodbye, fear of the guards in the hotel, puzzlement of the Kraus’ motives, and many more. The film allowed them to draw eonelusions about all raeism and how subtle it ean be.” Commented CJFF Direetor Riek Willenzik, “The Charlotte Jewish Film Festival has tmly be- eome a eommunity staple and eredit goes to those that have built the festival in the past and all who are eurrently involved in exeeut- ing an ineredible event.” Willenzik also noted the reeord support from patrons and eorpo- rate partners without whom none of the inspiring and entertaining events would have been possible. “The entire eommunity has em- braeed this festival warmly and is anxious to be a part of it,” said Willenzik. The seeond night of the festi val, CJFF set a single night atten danee reeord with the showing of the hilarious When Jews Were Funny. The big erowd was enter tained by a eomedian before the show. Three nights later, that reeord was broken as just under 500 people paeked Temple Israel for The Jewish Cardinal, whieh was followed by an interfaith panel diseussion. Other key partieipants in CJFF 10 were the filmmakers and sub- jeets themselves. 50 Children di reetor Steven Pressman and Out in the Dark direetor Miehael Mayer attended as did Fay Tenen baum, the eharming Cake Lady, along with Adam Hirseh, the film’s direetor. Ninety-three-year- old Ms. Tenenbaum drove from Atlanta, bringing eakes with her. Attendanee at the CJFF’s Mon days at the Lake series, eo-spon- sored by the Lake Norman Jewish Couneil, more than doubled last year’s similar sereenings at the Lake. “This is an area that we eer- tainly want to eontinue to develop in future years,” said Willenzik.
