thusiastic parents and teachers.
They are driven to provide social
connections for our preschool
community, as well as financial
support. Thanks to the PTO, the
teachers have continued to receive
classroom supplies and materials
to enhance the quality of class
room instruction. The PTO’s con
tribution also continues to allow
our school to maintain low teacher
to children ratios, bring in special
activities for the children, have
educational materials in the class
rooms as well as specialists that
work with the children weekly.
They also spend time creating
events for our families. Among
the activities planned, the PTO
had a fabulous Kick-off to the
School Year to the CJP 25th An
niversary Party to the End of the
Year get together. Leading the
PTO this year are:
Andrea Davids - President

Amy Foster - Treasurer
Jessica Demeter - Secretary
Ilyssa Rubenstein - Room Parent

Temple Beth El Celebrates Teens

B’nei Mitzvah students was our
son’s first exposure to teaching
and it was during the tutoring
process that he learned how
‘teaching’ is a two way street, and
the amazing feeling you get when
your pupil gets to the bimah and
happily leads the service with
confidence.”
Parent Fran Samarel adds,
“Being a madrich has taught our

boys (Ethan, 22, Jeremy, 20, and
Brandon, 19) so much about re
sponsibility, commitment and
being part of an extended Jewish
family. We are so grateful that
they had this experience and truly
believe that it has positively im
pacted them well beyond those
impressionable pre-teen/teenage
years.”
Caren Gale knows first-hand
how powerful the connection can
be between the madrichim and
our special needs students. “Our
son has autism, but he wanted to
be a Bar Mitzvah. Without the
dedication of the madrichim and
the Tikvah Charlotte staff, our
son’s Bar Mitzvah would not have
been possible. So much that mat
tered and was felt - both in prepa
ration for the day and on that day
- would have been lost to us. We
would not have seen his diligence,
the courage it took to work at
something difficult, every day,
unprompted. We would not have
witnessed the pride our son felt
when called to the bimah. We
would not have seen how stirring
the chants were for our son or
how deeply he felt the music. My
husband and I would have been
robbed of discovering parts of our
son not previously known, be
cause of autism’s barricades. And
finally, we would not have wit
nessed the madrichim, beaming
as they sat in the sanctuary,
mouthing every word of Torah
along with our son, Jonathan.”
Our teen madrichim acquire
are important skills they take to
their college experience and be
yond. They become active lead
ers in Flillel and seek out teaching
positions at synagogues near their
university campuses. As we are
teaching our children, we create
teachers for our future. In sharing
our pride in the accomplishment
of the hundreds of Jewish teens
who have participated in this pro
gram, come join us and see how
bright our future looks.

Let us help you protect your
skin from sun damage
Sun damage can cause premature aging and
skin cancer. Piedmont Plastic Surgery &
Dermatology recommends that you protect
yourself this summer by:
• Wearing protective clothing and a sunscreen
that is SPF 30 or higher.
• Avoiding the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
If diagnosed with skin cancer, ask your doctor
if you would benefit from Mohs surgery. The
Mohs technique allows surgeons to create the
smallest defect possible. Piedmont Plastic
Surgery & Dermatology is the ONLY practice in
the area offering Mohs surgery and immediate
plastic surgical reconstruction.
