Alison and Mark Lerner
Alison and Mark Lerner are
among the 282 individuals and
families in our community who
have created legacy gifts to sup
port its future. Please take the
time to read their story and thank
them for their generosity. It is our
hope that you will be inspired and
encouraged to think about how
you can create your own Jewish
legacy.
By Alison Lerner
Charlotte’s Jewish eommunity
is a signifieant part of our lives.
For that reason alone, the deeision
to leave a legaey gift to sustain its
future was an easy deeision for us.
When 1 was 16, my family moved
to Charlotte from Marlton, NJ.
Being native New Yorkers, my
parents had some anxiety about
moving to the South and to a
smaller Jewish eommunity. Mueh
of our lives had revolved around
the Jewish eommunity - our syna
gogue and Jewish youth groups
for my brother and me. Upon ar
riving in Charlotte, 1 immediately
beeame involved with BBYO. As
a teenager, it was a great way to
transition to life in the south and
enabled me to meet friends and
feel more at home.
Mark is a native Charlottean.
His family was aetively involved
at Temple Israel and throughout
the entire eommunity. His father,
Sam Lerner, who passed away in
1987, was one of the eommunity’s
quiet leaders and founders of
Shalom Park. His mother, Lynn,
Our Jewish Community’s
Newest Legacy Donors
The following individuals/fam-
ilies have reeently informed our
eommunity, through Foundation
for the Charlotte Jewish Commu

ate Your Jewish Legaey
eommunity partners, that they
have ereated a legaey gift to sup
port the future of Charlotte’s Jew
ish eommunity. These individuals
have established eight new legaey
gifts. Some are ereating legaey
gifts for the first time while others
have added new organizations to
their previously ereated legaey
plans. There are now 282 individ
uals/families throughout our Jew
ish eommunity who have ineluded
a loeal Jewish organization in
their legaey plans ereating 433
unique legaeies. We thank our
newest legaey donors and wel-
eome them into our eommunity’s
Book of Life Soeiety.

eommunity and has generously
supported the Jewish eommunity
and other loeal eharities with
“Your Truly Needlepoint.” Mark
learned through his family the im-
portanee of being eonneeted to the
Jewish eommunity and the obliga
tion to give baek.
We met for the first time in
1993 on the Stairmaster in the
gym at the Levine JCC. Mark had
returned to Charlotte after reeeiv-
ing his undergraduate degree from
Georgetown and his law degree
from the University of North Car
olina. After living two years in At
lanta, following graduation from
the University of North Carolina,
1 had also returned to town. We
were married in 1994.
As young adults, we joined the
first Bernstein Leadership Group
and 1 beeame more involved with
the Federation. Our ehildren at
tended the Jewish Presehool on
Sardis and the Charlotte Jewish
Day Sehool, where 1 am still very
involved. Temple Israel and the
LJCC have also played an impor
tant role in our family’s life. Mark
and 1 have served on boards of
eight different Jewish organiza
tions and have reeeived great ful
fillment from our volunteer work.
We love the Charlotte Jewish
eommunity and are proud of our
involvement in it. For Mark and
me, leaving a legaey is our way of
saying thank you to the eommu
nity that has given us so mueh.^
