On Friday, July 11, Congrega
tion Ohr HaTorah will host a spe
cial Friday Night Shabbaton
dinner. The theme of the Shabba
ton is Liberty as we celebrate our
independence and thank God for
the freedom we enjoy in our coun
try which encourages religious
freedom and allows us to practice
our Judaism with pride.
Today, more than ever, we rec
ognize that freedom cannot be
taken for granted and that we
cherish our liberty and freedom to
practice our Judaism unimpeded.
We, the people of the United
States and especially Jews in this
country, thrive as religious free
dom is enjoyed by all of us. This
freedom is still elusive to
many people in other parts
of the world.

we live in this great coun
try, most of us by the sac
rifices that our parents,
grandparents, or great-
grandparents made to ar
rive at these blessed
shores. But it was not easy
and much was lost in life and pos
session in order to reach our goal
of freedom and prosperity.
So, it’s not by coincidence that
this happy and celebratory Shab
baton falls on the Shabbat before
the 17 th day of the Hebrew month
of Tammuz when we usher in the
three weeks of mourning. It is
during these three weeks that we
lament the destruction of
Jerusalem of old.
This Shabbat serves as a day of
hope and yearning: hope for a bet
ter future and yearning to return to
our promised land and to see the
rebuilding of the Holy Temple in
Jerusalem.

Tammuz which corresponds to
July 1.
The Rebbe, whose insight in
Torah erudition was legendary, is
considered one of the foremost re
ligious leaders of our time. The
Rebbe touched the lives of count
less individuals and continues to
live on through his visionary
teachings, and in the work of his
emissaries whom he charged with
bringing the light of Judaism to
every comer of the globe.
There will be a buzz in the
global Jewish community as
many will be commemorating this
event in a meaningful and uplift
ing way. Rabbi Joseph Telushkin
is releasing a new book, Rebbe -
The Life and Teachings of Men
achem M. Schneerson, the Most
Influential Rabbi in Modem His
tory. The famed Talmudic scholar.
Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, is penning
a book called My Rebbe.
The Shabbaton is open to the
entire Jewish community. Partici
pants will enjoy a delicious home-
cooked, American style Shabbat
meal, and participate in special
entertaining activities during
which we will learn how to appre
ciate and value this God-given
freedom. Services will begin at

lowed by dinner and activities.
