The Charlotte Jewish News - June-July 2014 - Page 16 Jewish Family Services Opens Counseling Center in Lake Norman What makes a Jewish eommu- nity saered, a “Kehilah Ke- doshah”? Members of the Jewish eommunity in Lake Norman ean tell you. As Temple Kol Tikvah’s Rabbi Miehael Shields says, “Like a sukkah, it is eonstrueted of many different branehes woven together. The broader the Sukkah’s reaeh, the more tightly its branehes are woven, the stronger it stands.” These metaphorieal branehes speak to the individual members of the eommunity, the ways the members eome together, as well as the programs that serve the eommunity. Jewish Family Serviees also knows what makes a Kehilah Ke- doshah. As a member of Shalom Park, JFS is eonveniently loeated at the eenter of Jewish life in Charlotte, allowing members of the eommunity to take advantage of our programs and serviees. As the Jewish eommunity in Huntersville, Cornelius, David son, Mooresville, and Statesville has eontinued to grow, and Tem ple Kol Tikvah settled into its new building in downtown Davidson, the synagogue has established it self as the eenter of Jewish life in Lake Norman, opening their doors to other Jewish groups in the area, as well as non-Jewish groups sueh as the Boy Seouts and Davidson Learns. “As JFS has served as the heart of the Charlotte Jewish eommu nity, expanding to Lake Norman will allow us to serve as the heart Caroline Biber of the Lake Nor man Jewish eom munity,” says JFS Exeeutive Direetor Stephanie Starr. “We are able to provide them with many of the same serviees we offer in Charlotte, inelud ing our Counseling Center, My Solu tions Case Man agement and support programs sueh as parenting and earegiver workshops. The members of these outlying eommunities want and deserve Jewish serviees within their eommunity. Our programs help form and nurture the Lake Norman Jewish eommunities, and help them beeome true saered eommunities.” JFS and the families in Lake Norman aren’t the only ones who know a thing about building a sa ered eommunity. Jewish Federa tion of Greater Charlotte knows that every strong Jewish eommu nity needs a Jewish Family Serv iees. That’s why they provided an impaet grant whieh allowed JFS to open an offiee in Lake Norman. Caroline Biber, MSW, LCSW, will serve as Program Manager for the Lake Norman offiee. A li- eensed therapist, Caroline will provide eonfidential therapy and ease management serviees from her offiee in Temple Kol Tikvah. Members of the eommunity Norman had the opportunity to meet Caroline the weekend of May 2 when she attended Shabbat serviees at Temple Kol Tikvah and the JFS Love and Logie Workshop for Presehool Parents. As Rabbi Shields wrote in his letter to the Federation aeeom- panying the grant applieation, “The es tablishment and devel opment of a JFS presenee in the Lake region will have a pro foundly positive impaet on the eommunity. It will assure that the vulnerable in our eommunity have the support they need and will make it possible for the Jewish eommunity in Lake Norman to partner with JFS in eontinuing to build a eommunity that embodies a eulture of serviee.” Jewish Family Serviees is espe- eially grateful to the Jewish Fed eration for allowing us to add a braneh to the Kehilah Kedoshah of Lake Norman. For appoint ments with Caroline, please eall the main JFS offiee at 704-364- 6594. « V# Jewish Family SERVICES the fieitrt of ouf eonuntniil^' Parents: Dreading the Idea of Spending All Summer with Your Kids?
