If so, Melton elasses eould be just what you need. The Florenee Melton Sehool of Adult Jewish Learning is a program with eurrieulum de veloped by seholars at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and taught by loeal elergy. The Melton Sehool is the largest pluralistie adult Jewish edueation network in the world. Founded in 1980 at the initiative of Florenee Zaeks Melton, the Melton Sehool has been a pioneer in text-based adult Jewish learning. The Melton Sehool has more than 30,000 graduates worldwide today. Below is a student testimonial from David Epstein, whieh tells of personal growth from eommitting to two years of learning through the Core Currieulum of The Melton Sehool. “As I write this pieee, I am eompleting my two years of study in the Melton Core Currieulum Program at the Levine-Sklut Li brary here. Aside from my per sonal family life eyele events, these two years of learning have turned out to be the seminal event in my Jewish life. My Jewish adult literaey has expanded in a positive manner whieh I eannot even begin to quantify. I have begun to understand Jewish life and Jewish thought, past and pres ent. “As one of our teaehers empha sizes at the beginning of eaeh elass, who we are as Jews in 2014 has been shaped by the events and ehallenges of our over five thou sand eontinuous years of history. Unless we as Jews know where we have been, and unless we know where we are now as Jews, how ean we possibly know where we are going? “I urge you to sign up today be- eause anyone who thinks that it is possible to understand our Torah by reading only the words of the Torah is in for a mind-ehanging experienee from the very first day of elass. Similarly, anyone who thinks that Jewish life and Jewish thought are statie, or that it is not eapable of ehange, or that Jewish life and Jewish thought has not ehanged will quiekly view Ju daism in an entirely different light. “Through diseussions and tex tual learning, you begin to under stand the eomplexity of Jewish thought and wisdom, and you start to understand the differenees in interpretation and opinion on var ious questions as you read from, and diseuss Orthodox, Conserva tive, Reform, Reeonstruetionist, and other sourees. “From these diseussions, stu dents will realize how their per sonal knowledge and thinking about Judaism has been influ- eneed by their individual Jewish edueations, as well as by their in dividual Jewish family and Jewish baekgrounds, and how their per sonal Jewish experienees have shaped and defined their personal thinking and understanding of Ju daism.” Registration and eourse de- seriptions for Melton elasses ean be found at www.lsjl.org or by eontaeting Marei Goldberg at 704-944-6740 or melton@ shalomeharlotte.org. Classes begin the week of August 25, 2014 (morning and evening elasses are available and elasses are filling up quiekly). ^ Back to School Means Back to Books at the Levine Skint Judaic Library As the sehool year gets started again the library has many fun and enriehing programs planned for ehildren of all ages. The li brary is getting baek to sehool with the help of Erie Carle. Stop by today to see all of the fun ae- tivities and books for kids. With the sehool year revving up the library is pleased to intro- duee our new storyteller, Linda Lepow. Linda has lived in Char lotte for 17 years and has been working with ehildren for over twenty years. She and her hus band Steve raised their two ehil dren in Charlotte and are very ae- tive members at the LJCC. She has been teaehing seeond grade religious sehool at Temple Beth El for four years. She has also taught Mommy and Me elasses as well as musie and movement elasses for presehoolers. She is passionate about working with ehildren and believes a hands-on approaeh enables ehildren to learn and mature at a higher level. She is a strong advoeate for literaey and will be a great asset to the li brary. ^ Linda Lepow reads to presehoolers from summer eamp in the Library s Children s Room. Please join the entire Levine-Sklut Judaic Library in recognizing Doris Goldsmith. After eight years of service to the library Doris has decided to retire and spend her time traveling and learning. Please join us on Thursday, August 28 from 2-3 PM in the library as we celebrate her many years of service and wish her well on her retirement. Hadassah’s Efforts in Israel (Continued from page 10) As we have done in past emer- geneies. Youth Aliyah villages are prepared to take in ehildren and families from the South, where the majority of roekets are falling—or to weleome the families of their own students who might be in danger. I know I speak for every one of you when I say that our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with the Israeli people today. But some times thoughts and prayers are not enough. We need to be praetieal, and ready for any eventuality. Two years ago we ereated a Hadassah Readiness Fund, for sit uations just like this one. You ean donate to the Hadassah Readiness Fund by visiting www.hadassah.org. ^ Patricia Johnson, president of the Charlotte Chapter of Hadas sah, submitted this from Hadas sah. “We should not let the land flowing with milk and honey become the land llowttig with blood and tears.” - Yitchak Rabin in a speech at the White House, September 28, 1995
