The Charlotte Jewish News - September 2014 - Page 3 ^ Teen P2G Summer Exchange Program ^ (Continued from previous page) i I t $ I t after spending time in the Holy Land. “This past summer I had the opportunity to visit Israel on an exehange program ealled Tikkun Olam and it was the highlight of my summer. When I first got to Israel, I was in stantly amazed by the differ- enees in their soeiety eompared to ours. The first thing I notieed is the language; every sign, every paper, and every voiee speaking loud Hebrew, Arable, and oeeasionally English. It is both beautiful and ehallenging. When we finally met our Israeli friends, hugs were exehanged and we immediately began to eonneet. People may say that the best part of Israel is the his tory, or the religion, or the beauty of the land. All of that is great and helps you really eon neet to Israel. However, noth ing eonneets you more to the land than friends and families that you know you’ll have for ever, who try new things with you, and who immediately in vite you to their homes when ever you return. “Israel is all the more en dearing to me knowing that I have now a personal eonnee- tion to it. I know that I will al ways have friends there and I know more about the plaees and history of Jews and Israel. It is my belief that, given the opportunity, all Jews should visit Israel on programs like this one so that they ean expe- rienee the beauty of Israel’s land and people. “The seeond part of the trip was when the Israelis eame to Charlotte. They were so awed by how big everything was in partieular by the free refills that you eould get at restaurants. Also we had more time to know eaeh other better. It was an amazing experienee in whieh we all learned more about Charlotte, the South, and in our ease we had the ehanee to go to Washington, DC with my family. It was diffieult to say bye, but I am pretty sure Orr will eonsider this as his family and his house, in the same way, I think I have now a family in Israel.” -David Rabinovich “My experienee in Israel started the moment I met my new friends at Ben Gurion Air port. At first it was a little awk ward but as we began to bond at the Bedouin tents, we grew more eomfortable with eaeh other. We started the bonding experienee with eamel rides. They were bumpy and wild but fun at the same time. That night we all slept in the same tent. nights we went to the beaeh. One day we even saw the sun set from the beaeh, it was breathtaking. Overall this trip to Israel was a blast, we saw so Jordan River, the Whitewater Center was so mueh eooler be- eause it was faster and it was aetual whitewater. My family went to Washington, DC for two days: it was sueh a eool ex perienee for the Israelis that stayed with us. They got to see all the monuments, the Capitol, the White House, and some of the museums. “This exehange program has ehanged my vision of Israel and Judaism beeause I am now re ally eonneeted to our Home land, to the people there. We are very different, but at the same time we are so alike; it is eool to diseover that.” -Ari Rabinovich “I had sueh an amazing ex perienee. I loved experieneing the eulture of the Israeli teens and seeing how they live their lives and showing them how we live ours.” -Jessica Soto For more information and/or to partieipate in the 2015 P2G Teen Leadership Exehange, please eontaet Tal Stein, Diree- tor of Community Relations and Israel Affairs at 704-944- 6751 or tal.stein@jewishehar- lotte.org. ^ t I whieh was awesome, we all got to know eaeh other better, I even found out more about the Amerieans I was with. After only a few hours of sleep we woke up to elimb Masada. The sunrise on top of Masada was like nothing I had ever seen be fore. “By the time we went to Jerusalem we were all joking and laughing together. In the hotel all the guys formed a elose group ealled the “Bad Boys” and we were so elose and had so mueh fun together. In Jerusalem, we went to plaees like the Kotel and Mt. Herzl. Serious plaees like these were very interesting to visit and learn about beeause we have nothing like these plaees in Ameriea. “After Jerusalem we finally went to our host homes. I think that my experienee was more unique than others sinee I stayed in a kibbutz. The kibbutz was awesome. My host Alon knew everybody whieh shows that everybody knew every body in the kibbutz. The sense of eommunity was very eool. It was also interesting beeause there was a dairy farm on the kibbutz, whieh was like nothing you eould see in Charlotte. While staying in the kibbutz we went to plaees like the Dead Sea, Tel Aviv, and many other plaees. Eaeh plaee was as unique and as interesting as the next. Eaeh night though we would meet up at somebody’s home and hang out, other SAVE THE DATE Celebrating 75 years The Main Event Featuring Iconic Israeli singer- songwriter David Broza December 11, 2014 JEWISH^ FEDE^RATION$ :HAnLCHTE OF C A £ A http://www.davidbroza.net/en/# many plaees and had sueh a good time with all my friends and my Israeli family. “When the Israelis eame to stay with us, it was like pieking up where we had left off. Al though our group was smaller, most of the people we knew were still with us. We were hav ing sueh a good time. When we were in Charlotte, we saw sev eral museums ineluding the Levine Museum of the New South. We also walked around downtown and saw all the in teresting plaees there. I think the best things we did with the Israelis was to go to Carowinds and the National Whitewater Center. They had so mueh fun beeause they have nothing like this baek in Israel.
