Dr. Lipstadt will diseuss emerging eontemporary manifes tations of anti-Semitism, partieu- larly in Europe. Dr. Deborah Lipstadt is the Dorot Professor of Modem Jew ish and Holoeaust Studies at Emory University in Atlanta. In addition to authoring several books about the Holoeaust, Lips- dtadt was a historieal eonsultant to the United States Holoeaust Memorial Museum, and has served as an advisor to former Seeretary of State Madeline Al bright on matters of religious per- seeution abroad. She has appeared on CNN, CBS’s “Sixty Minutes,” NBC’s “Today Show,” and is a frequent eontributor to numerous national newspapers. Lipstadt was a eonsultant to the United States Holoeaust Memorial Museum. In 1994, she was appointed by Bill Clinton to the United States Holo eaust Memorial Couneil, on whieh she served two terms as a member of its Exeeutive Commit tee and ehaired the Edueational Deborah Lipstadt Committee and Aeademie Com mittee. Dr. Lipstadt has been ealled upon by members of the United States Congress to eonsult on politieal responses to Holo eaust denial. She has reeeived numerous teaehing awards ineluding Emory’s student government as- soeiation’s award for being the teaeher most likely to motivate students to learn about new and unfamiliar topies and the Emory Williams award, for her eourses on modem Jewish and Holoeaust studies. Stati sties show that some form of abuse exists in one in three teen relationships and in one in four homes. Oetober is Domestie Violenee Awareness Month, and sinee 2009, 19 Jewish ageneies in Charlotte have banded together to reeognize this impor tant eause. Onee again this year, these agen eies are aetively en- eouraging all of us to take a visible stand against domestie abuse in our Jewish eommu- nity and to follow the Jewish values of en- Stephanie Starr suring justiee and help ing those in need. In spite of the agen eies’ efforts, fewer peo ple in our Jewish eommunity are eoming forward today to ask for help. “Vietims often avoid speaking out beeause they believe they are alone, are ashamed or are afraid that others will judge them,” explains Stephanie Starr, Exeeu tive Direetor of Jewish Family Serviees. “Do mestie violenee is about power and eontrol by the abuser and that’s why it’s important that our eommunity work to gether to support the vie- tim so he or she feels Sue Worrel safe in knowing that eoming forward will lead to positive ehanges,” says Starr. Sue Worrel, Exee utive Direetor of the Jewish Federation (whieh helped un derwrite the initial eampaign in 2009) wholeheartedly agrees. “Creating a safe haven is the job of the entire Jewish eom munity,” says Worrel. “Whether it is a member of a Temple, the Jewish Community Center, a young adult at Moishe House, or a senior attending Oasis, a vietim of abuse should feel believed, ae- eepted, eared for, and proteeted going to anyone in our ageneies,” says Worrel. “It is no easy task, but we are eommitted to making that happen.” (Continued on page 11) Charlotte’s First Jewish Infant Program Coming This January “A new baby is like the begin ning of all things-wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities.” -Eda LaShan The word is out. The flexible program will offer two, three, or five day options for full time eare. JPS’ distinguished history and North Carolina 5 Star rating will enable us to keep our student: teaeher ratios low, our quality high and our priees eompetitive. Our full day infant room will have North Carolina state eertified teaehers with Early Childhood Edueation degrees. The infant teaehers will have training in In fant/Toddler development, as well as First Aid & CPR training and Sleep Safety Training. Teaehers will be assigned to infants and families as primary earegivers, to help establish eonsisteney as well as a trusting and loving relation ship. Our warm elassroom and in- eredible ratios will feel like home away from home. As early ehildhood profession als, we know that ehildren ehange and grow so quiekly in the first year.
