Unfortunately it happens all too often, and women and girls are partieularly vulnerable. From a stolen purse to ear jaekings to date rape. Is there anything a woman ean do to eontrol or even prevent attaeks from happening? Should she ever try to defend herself? It takes a tough and knowl edgeable person to know the an swers to questions like these and Captain Irwin Carmiehael of the Meeklenburg County Sheriff’s Offiee is that person. Offering his adviee for Sueeess for Safety and Women’s Awareness Response, based on his books of the same names, he will appear at a free training for women and girls age 15 and above on Sunday, Oetober 12 at 1 PM at Shalom Park. A 28-year veteran of the Sher iff’s Offiee, Capt. Carmiehael has presented his program on erime prevention and self-defense to or ganizations, businesses, and groups throughout the state and even overseas. Throughout Oetober, every temple and major Jewish ageney will offer a free purple pin; purple signifies the fight against domes- tie abuse. Community members are urged to wear the pin to show their support and also read infor mation being disseminated on do- mestie abuse so they ean take individual and eolleetive respon sibility in advoeating for them selves, their families and friends, and their eommunities. “Stories of Crisis,” a free broehure with resouree information, and life- size blue silhouettes featuring sto ries of loeal Jewish survivors will be displayed throughout Shalom Park.
