Annual Community Memorial Service

By Brian Yesowitch, Board
President, Hebrew Cemetery
Association
“As Jewish people, we don’t
tend to dwell on death, but it hap
pens and families experienee loss.
This eemetery assoeiation is the
produet of nearly one hundred and
fifty years of families experiene-
ing loss and then eoming together
to support eaeh other. That sup
port is the foundation of our Char
lotte Jewish eommunity.” These
words were spoken by Lisa Blau,
a eommunity leader many of you
know from her work as a former
President of the Charlotte Jewish
Presehool and as the Lay Leader
for the Bernstein Leadership
Group of the Jewish Federation.
Lisa shared this thought at our
eemetery’s reeent Annual Memo
rial Serviee and Building Dediea-
tion, held the Sunday between the
High Holy Days, to illustrate why
she and her husband, Barry,
named the Hebrew Cemetery As
soeiation as one of the Benefiei-
ary Ageneies in the Create your
Jewish Legaey Program.
Lisa was just one of many
speakers that gorgeous fall morn
ing. The eemetery hosted over
350 members and guests, along
with a dozen members of our
eommunity’s elergy representing
seven Charlotte area temples and
synagogues. The morning also
served as the Grand Opening and
Dedieation of the eemetery’s Me
morial Building.
“Meant to last for generations”
were the words of Bill Goreliek,
Building and Development Co-
Chair who, along with Develop
ment Co-Chair Mare Silverman
and Building Co-Chair Kevin
Levine, put endless months into
the preparation and exeeution of a
eonstruetion and landseaping plan
that has ehanged the way every
one will experienee the Charlotte
Hebrew Cemetery. The eenter-
pieee of the Memorial Building is
the Great Aron Kodesh (Holy
Ark) that was donated by the
board and membership of Temple
Beth El. The Ark is the foeal point
of the beautiful Mindy Ellen
Levine Chapel, a wonderful new
spaee for smaller funerals. Memo
rial plaques and donor reeognition
will adorn its walls.
The Goreliek Family Gathering
Room will aeeommodate family
and friends after funerals and un
veilings, and may be used for
luneheons and meetings. The Ellis
and Lena Berlin Family Room is
available for pastoral eounseling,
small meetings, and for families
to share some private time before
a funeral.
The building has ample serviee
and storage spaee for our eeme
tery operations. Well-appointed
bathroom faeilities are available
through an eleetronie aeeess door
way where members and visitors
only need a eode to enter.
Visitors to our Annual Memo
rial Serviee were struek by how
beautiful the appointments, fix
tures, and deeorations were within
eaeh of the building’s rooms.
This was all due to the diligenee
and expertise of Teri Seidman,
who was also reeognized for her
Sam Kaplan and Lynne Sheffer, far left, with Sam's children and
grandchild, at the Hebrew Cemetery Annual Memorial Service, 5775

eontributions to the building at the
serviee.
The building wasn’t the only
improvement to our beautiful
eemetery grounds. Approaehing
the Cemetery Building from the
eirele, one may walk through the
Blumenthal Memorial Garden. Its
array of beautiful and halakhiely
appropriate plants and trees add
the right amount of eolor to the
beautifully manieured lawns of
our eemetery’s newest seetions.
Our historie seetion has long been
admired for its abundanee of ma
ture trees. Our next stage of plan
ning involves a eollaboration with
“Trees Charlotte” to expand our
arboreal plan into the newer see
tions of our eemetery. This effort
will ereate more uniformity to the
lush look our eemetery visitors
appreeiate and will add to the dig
nity and beauty of our beloved in
stitution.
Additionally, visitors to the
eemetery ean be on the lookout
for the Silverman Cirele artwork
whieh will weleome visitors to
our eemetery for generations to
eome.
Our Assoeiation’s progress on
the landseaping, grounds, and
Memorial Building is substantial,
but you ean still do your part. Me
morial Plaques whieh honor a
loved one and reeognize the donor
are available for $1,000, but
pledges and donations of any
amount are weleome. You may

mation.
We’re in the middle of our see-
ond year of the Grinspoon Foun
dation Challenge for the Create
Your Jewish Legaey Campaign.
We met our first year goal, but
need your help to aehieve our goal
for year two. The paperwork is
very easy to fill out - and if you
have already made your C JL eom-
mitment, it’s easy to add the
eemetery to your benefieiary plan.
You may eontaet the FCJC di-
reetly or ean also go through San
dra to make your plans known.
Membership to the Cemetery
Assoeiation remains affordable
at $72/year per family. If you
have questions for me, I may
be reaehed at byshalomeh@
gmail.eom. Thank you, everyone,
for the wonderful feedbaek you
eontinue to provide as our Asso
eiation eontinues to expand and
improve. ^
