The Charlotte Jewish News -November 2014 - Page 13 Camp SOAR 2014 By Diana Ades “Let me win. But if I eannot win, let me be brave in the at tempt.” That is what all Speeial Olympians strive for whether at individual games or at Camp Soar (Speeial Olympies Athletie Re treat). For the last 14 summers, Camp Soar has offered a free eamp pro gram to speeial needs individuals, ages 10-70 years. The main pur pose of eamp is to transforms lives, eneourage leadership, and build athletie skills and sports manship. The mission of Speeial Olympies is to provide year-round sports training and athletie eom- petition in a variety of Olympie- type sports for ehildren and adults with intelleetual disabilities. Spe eial Olympies was looking for a something to fill a void for laek of summer programming. In 2001, Bob Bowler and Barry Sehumer deeided to start a eamp to fill this void of summer pro gramming. With their hard work and determination. Camp Soar was ereated and has been going strong ever sinee. With the generosity of the Levine JCC, area businesses sueh as the Compass Group, individual donations, and 400 volunteers do nating their time, 350+ eampers were able to partieipate in the eamp this past June. It takes these donations, an average of 380 volun teers, a dedieated steering eommittee, and the staff at the LJCC and Shalom Park Foundation to eontinue Bob’s and Barry’s dream. Campers spend eaeh day partieipating in sport aetivities sueh as, tennis, basketball, yoga, volley ball, fitness, and soeeer. In addition, eampers go bowling, play bingo and on the final day, they have a huge danee party that would put Studio54 to shame. Bob Bowler is able to bring in many loeal sports eelebrities from the Panthers and Flomets and even some retired athletes. Paul Silas, David Thompson, Muggsy Bogues, and Matt Carroll stopped by throughout the week to meet the eampers, give some sport ad- viee, and let the eampers know how mueh they admire eaeh and every one of them. They even bring their team maseots to meet the eampers and have some fun. One of the eamper’s favorite parts of the Camp is the arts and erafts led by Eileen Sehwartz.
