The Charlotte Jewish News - January 2015 - Page 3 J Mazel Tov & Congratulations Stan Greenspon and Maureen O’Keefe - Supporting Children and Families at UNC Lineberger Stan Greenspon and Maureen O’Keefe of Charlotte have a long history of helping others in need, partieularly ehildren. Among their many philanthropie efforts, Stan established a fund to help support young bone marrow transplant pa tients at Levine Children’s Hospi tal in Charlotte. Now he and Maureen have established a simi lar fund at UNC Lineberger Com prehensive Caneer Center. The Stan Greenspon and Mau reen O’Keefe UNC Lineberger Pediatrie Speeial Needs Fund will help families with the expenses that arise when a ehild needs ean- eer treatment. “Many of our pa tients travel great distanees to reeeive the speeialized eare we offer,” explains Patient Assis- tanee Coordinator for UNC Lineberger’s Comprehensive Caneer Support Program (CCSP), Cindy Rogers. “Also, when a ehild has eaneer, it’s eommon for the household ineome to deeline beeause parents take time off work to aeeompany their ehild to medieal appointments. Inereased expenses and a loss of ineome make an already stressful situa tion even more diffieult for our families.” Maureen explains their per- speetive. “While money for re- Stan Greenspon and Maureen O ’Keefe seareh and hospitals is important, we ean’t forget about the basie support these families may need. There is enough to worry about when you have a siek ehild with out worrying about how to pay for gas or utilities.” Stan, a proud alumnus of UNC, and Maureen are both long-time supporters of UNC Lineberger. They first learned about the good work being done at the eaneer eenter several years ago when their friend. Fountain Odom, told them how pleased he was with the eare his wife was reeeiv- ing there. They have sinee made regular an nual gifts. After touring the Pedi atrie Hematology and Oneology Clinie at the N.C. Caneer Hospital with Dr. Julie Blatt, they knew immediately that they wanted to do some thing to help the patients seeking treatment there. “Dr. Blatt’s passion for her patients was so evi dent,” reealls Maureen. “We put ourselves in the position of the parents trying to eare for those ehildren, and we knew that was what we wanted to support.” Rogers and her CCSP eol- leagues were thrilled to learn of Stan and Maureen’s generous gift. “With this gift, we will be able to tailor assistanee paekages that will address the individual needs or our pediatrie patient families,” says Rogers. “This fund will help our pediatrie patients get the eare they need, while helping reduee the finaneial stress the family is experieneing.” Stan and Maureen wanted to maximize the impaet of their gift to UNC Lineberger. They arranged for a substantial gift to be dispersed over time. The fund ean begin to help families imme diately, and it will eontinue to pro vide assistanee to patients and families in the future. UNC Lineberger is grateful for Stan and Maureen’s support and will share updates with them de tailing the ways in whieh their gift is being used to help. “We just wanted to do something to help these ehildren and their families during a diffieult time,” explains Stan. “We’re extremely pleased to support this ineredible hospital, and it’s meaningful to us to give to a plaee that we know will use the money well.” ^ Luck doesn’t buy & sell homes...
