Jewish Family Services Extends Reach
with Lake Norman Office

With the Lake Norman re
gion’s Jewish population grow
ing, Jewish Family Serviees of
Greater Charlotte has opened a
satellite offiee in Cornelius to ex
tend the reaeh of its eounseling,
senior outreaeh, and edueation
programs.
The program began last year
with an offiee in Temple Kol Tik-
vah, on South Street in Davidson.
It’s now on its own, in a suite of
offiees at 18139 W. Catawba Ave.
in Cornelius, near the interseetion
with Westmoreland Road.

worker and therapist who man
ages the new offiee, said the sep
arate site would allow the
program to reaeh beyond the loeal
eongregation to anyone in need of
help. “We hope this is the next
step for people utilizing our serv
iees,” Biber said.
Jewish Family Serviees has op
erated in Charlotte sinee 1980,
helping eommunity members
with earing for aging parents, the
loss of loved ones, unexpeeted
erises, mental health, finaneial,
and other problems.
“There are things outside the
skill set of a rabbi. Having this lit
erally right down the street is
great,” said Rabbi Miehael
Shields of Temple Kol Tikvah.
“Having an offiee right here
means people are more likely to
seek out help and take advantage
of edueational opportunities,” he
added.
In a survey, eongregation
members said they wanted JFS to
have a loeal presenee, and Rabbi
Shields had promoted the idea of
a Lake Norman satellite offiee,
said Stephanie Starr, exeeutive di-
reetor of Jewish Family Serviees
of Greater Charlotte.
The expansion north of Char
lotte has been made possible by
two-year grant from the Jewish
Federation of Greater Charlotte.
The grant provided $ 15,000 in the
first year last year and will pro
vide $19,000 this year.
“Our goal really is to get inte
grated into the eommunity,” Starr
said.
The new offiee should help in-
erease the number of people JFS
serves. Last year, the organization
served about 450 people aeross
the Charlotte region, JFS board
president Jennifer Collman said.
“We’re exeited to be up there
(at Lake Norman) to offer serv
iees,” she said. “There’s sueh a
growing Jewish eommunity in the
Lake Norman area, although our
eounseling serviees are open to
people of all faiths.”^
