The Charlotte Jewish News - May 2015 - Page 17 Between You and Me By Brian Yesowitch, Hebrew Cemetery Association Board President With the Super Bowl, we heard a lot of different uses of the word “between.” “The ball goes be tween the uprights.” “... the rela tionship between Pete Carroll and his teammates.” More reeently, with the NCAA basketball eham- pionship, we heard, “There are a lot of similarities between the two offenses.” In eaeh instanee, the word “between” has different meanings. In every ease, though, the word implies a proximity or a eonneetion. Whether that eonnee- tion is literal or figurative, the re lationship is no less important. I’d like to share with you some of the things going on between the fenees at the Hebrew Cemetery. 2015 looks to be another ban ner year for our Hebrew Ceme tery, now in our 145th year of serviee to the Charlotte Jewish eommunity. Our 15 member board of trustees, our direetor, and staff work hard eaeh month to en sure that the eemetery is up to the fimetional and high aesthetie stan dards the eommunity has grown to expeet. Our eemetery’s natural beauty was enhaneed on Sunday, Febru ary 8, when more than 70 volun teers planted 35 trees in observation of the Jewish holiday of Tu BiSh’vat. This program was eoordinated by our direetor, San dra Goldman and TreesCharlotte program direetor, Tammy Siegel. We intend to eontinue this program and weleome volunteer groups to eon- taet us for this or other programs. I eannot say enough good things about our many eommunity part ners. There are four tem ples in Charlotte whieh have formalized a rela tionship between their in stitutions and the Hebrew Cemetery. Temple Israel’s part nership dates baek to 1893, while Temple Kol Tikvah in Davidson formalized its relationship in 2014. Both of these eongregations (along with our other two temple partners. Congregation Ohr Ha- Torah and Temple Beth El) under stand the importanee of providing this bond between the Cemetery and their eongregants. The Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte is another great partner of the Hebrew Cemetery Assoeiation. Thanks to generous donations from the at-large eom munity, the Federation funded our Funeral Assistanee program with $7,500. This money, along with assistanee from Jewish Family Serviees, goes a long way towards providing our eommunity’s need iest individuals a dignified and ap propriate Jewish funeral. Soeial media eontinues to be a great forum between institutions and the general eommunity. I in vite you to visit and “like” our Faeebook page: faeebook.eom/ eesses The Blumenthal Garden will add peaceful hues of color to Hebrew Cemetery visitors’ experiences this spring. HebrewCemetery. Here you will find last minute ehanges in our hours, information in ease of in element weather and reeent pho tos of eemetery aetivities. One ongoing partnership on Faeebook is #ThrowbaekThursday. Eaeh month, in eonjunetion with the Levine Sklut Judaie Library (LSJL), our Cemetery displays eurated materials available for eheek out from the library. In Jan uary, we highlighted the relation ship between Martin Luther King, Jr. and Harry Golden who is buried at the Charlotte Hebrew Cemetery. In February, our #ThrowbaekThursday reeognized President’s Day and highlighted the relationship between our Jew ish eommunity and George Wash ington - who onee deseribed Charlotte as “a very trifling plaee ....” Be on the lookout for more #ThrowbaekThursday updates on the eemetery’s Faeebook page. While New Year’s resolutions may be over and done, it is not too late to eonsider funeral pre-plan ning. When you pre-plan, you ean save over 30% in plot and serviee fees. Payments are generally on a two year term. Our kind and helpful eemetery direetor, Sandra Goldman, ean walk you through the proeess - and there’s never “hard-sell ing” involved. Member ship is affordable at $72 annually. A lot has been said about the Create Your Jew ish Legaey program and the long term benefits to our eommunity’s institutions through bequests. Perhaps you just eelebrated the birth of a grandehild, reeeived an inheri- tanee or are drafting a will. These events offer an opportunity to forge a lasting relationship between your family and the Hebrew Cemetery. For 145 years, the Hebrew Cemetery has been a very real testa ment to the sustained sue- of our Charlotte Jewish eommunity. Now, with an enthusiastie but mature leader ship, your Cemetery Assoeiation is poised to embark on the next 145 years with sound polieies and praetiees that will ensure the eom munity will always have dignified and proper final resting plaees be tween the fenees of our Hebrew Cemetery. I hope you will eon sider adding the Hebrew Ceme tery Assoeiation to your CJL bequests.
