The Charlotte Jewish News - May 2015 - Page 7 Hadassah Visits Brookdale Carriage Club Providence By Alicia Cooper Since January 2014, I have been the a Recording Secretary of the Charlotte Chapter of Hadas sah. I felt becoming an active member of Hadassah would give me the opportunity to do good work in my community and help others. Through my volunteering with Hadassah, I realized I would like to reach out to Jewish senior citizens who were living in retire ment communities. I’d always wanted to volunteer in this man ner but the opportunity never pre sented itself. The great thing about being a member of the Charlotte Chapter of Hadassah was that I could create my own opportuni ties to be of service and have the support to turn my thoughts into action. I was connected with Jewish Family Services of Greater Char lotte at Shalom Park. Sheryl Ger- rard, JFS’s Volunteer Coordinator and Senior Outreach Assistant, let me know that there was a need for volunteers at the Assisted Living Unit of the Brookdale Carriage Club Providence. What do you think of when you hear the phrase Carolina Is raelite! These questions and more will be answered when you join the LSJL on Sunday, May 31 at 7 PM in the Sam Lemer Center for an exciting event with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and the Levine Museum for the New South. We will be hosting Kimberly Marlowe Hartnett, author of the new book Carolina Israelite: How Harry Golden Made Us Care about Jews, the South, and Civil Rights, a biography about the late Harry Golden. Golden was a jour nalist, civil rights activist, and a Charlotte resident. Hartnett will be leading a multimedia event featuring short video clips of Harry Golden as well as reading excerpts from her new book. After the program she will take ques tions from the audience. Some reviews of the book in clude: “Kimberly Marlowe Hartnett’s fascinating new book, Carolina Israelite, reminds us of the old aphorism that truth is sometimes stranger than fiction. Written in sparkling prose and bristling with insight, her authoritative biogra phy of Harry Golden ... show cases the author’s gift for storytelling which rivals that of her protagonist ... the book is a joy from start to finish.”—Ray mond Arsenault, author of Free dom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice “In a book both sweeping and meticulous, raucous and thought ful, Kimberly Marlowe Hartnett Levine Museum of the New South ISRAELITE dinate visits to the Assisted Living Community. This March, we decided to have Passover-themed visit. Lynda White, one of our Charlotte Chap ter of Hadassah Programming VPs, and I brought macaroons to nosh and seltzer to sip. As an extra treat Max Rosewater, a local high school student who is also a talented trumpet player and the son of one of our Charlotte Chapter of Hadassah Membership VPs Amy Rosewater, joined us to play for the residents. We all en joyed the music he performed im mensely and it was a wonderful way to close a fantastic visit.
