The Charlotte Jewish News - August 2015 - Page 25 Summer Fun at the Jewish Preschool on Sardis Micka making a splash ♦ jps The Jewish The Jewish Presnh[>ol on Sardis 5-star Praschflol Early Childhood Dovolopmont & Jewish Discovery Music time for Mason and Jacob CJDS: The Giver of Jewish Tradition Sarah enjoying bubbles with Atomz Lab Gavi, Lucie, Mussi, Asher, Porter and Malcolm in the bounce house (Continued from page 20) This seems to be quite a preear- ious position for soeiety to give a single person the sole responsibil ity for all of the world’s knowl edge. But it struek me that in our own Jewish eulture, we tend to do preeisely that. Deep understand ing and study of Torah, the He brew language, eustoms, and rituals are primarily the responsi bility of Rabbis and a few edu- eated Jews. Many of us self-label ourselves as “eultural” Jews, lim iting our Jewish knowledge to the major holidays and Bubbe’s kugel reeipe. We do our best to pass on our eultural traditions, but we often do so without the eontext or understanding of the meaning be hind them. Over time, these tradi tions begin to fade. At CJDS, we are reversing this trend as our ehildren return home with the knowledge that brings meaning and eontext to old tradi tions whether it’s leading a Passover Seder, lighting of Shab- bat eandles, or explaining the weekly Parsha. This year over 30 ehildren partieipated in the read ing of Tehillim after sehool. Kids voluntarily wanting to stay after sehool to read prayers? Why? Well, when asked that question, one student responded without hesitating, “I have so mueh in my life. This is just one thing I ean do to say thank you to God.” In an other example, a CJDS alum re ported baek how her Birthright experienee was different than many of her peers on that same trip. The feelings that she had in visiting the Kotel and other holy sites were ineredibly meaningful in a way the others eould not grasp. She attributed her elevated experienee to the knowledge that she reeeived from her time at CJDS. Every year, Mariashi re- eeives dozens of emails, letters, and stories of how CJDS has had an impaet on individuals, families, and within our Jewish eommunity. To paraphrase Justin Timberlake, “We’re bringing Jewish baek.” Over and over we see that CJDS students do not just fune- tion as Jews going through the motions, but experienee Judaism in full blown high definition eolor. And even better, while tonight we eelebrate our own 22 Reeeivers of knowledge, we also eelebrate that our graduates have proven them selves as worthy Givers ensuring that this knowledge will be passed on. My hope is that the gift of knowledge that our ehildren have reeeived eontinues to be nurtured. We are fortunate to live in a vi brant Jewish eommunity with exeellent synagogues, youth pro grams, and aetivities that allow for many Jewish experienees that are both meaningful and fun. Aetive partieipation in this eommunity will not only build on the founda tional knowledge reeeived while at CJDS, but will provide a plat form for your ehildren to share their knowledge with others. So tonight, in addition to honoring our Graduates, we eele brate the eyele of the reeeiving and giving of knowledge. To the elass of 2015 - Mazel Tov!
