Tov & Congratulations Cary Bernstein Recognized as One of Mecklenburg’s 50 Most Influential Women For seven years, The Mecklen burg Times has seleeted the area’s 50 Most Influential Women. This year, Cary Bernstein was ineluded in the prestigious group. Through Spay Neuter Char lotte, the organization Bernstein founded in 2010, she has made a differenee in the lives of more than 27,000 dogs and eats, and saved thousands more of their po tential offspring from the possibil ity of death by euthanasia. Bernstein deeided to start the foundation after ehairing the board of the Humane Soeiety of Charlotte and learning the magni tude of the problem of unwanted or stray animals in the Charlotte area. Spay Neuter Charlotte also provides low-eost health eare for pets whose owners ean’t afford a private veterinarian. The editors of The Mecklen burg Times asked her what led her to start Spay Neuter Charlotte and when the program started. Bern stein responded: “I founded Spay Neuter Charlotte out of a eoneem about how our eommunity treats homeless dogs and eats. Until re- eently, the City of Charlotte was euthanizing 15,000 healthy dogs and eats eaeh year beeause there wasn’t enough room at the shel ters to keep them. In addition to inereasing pet adoptions, the most effeetive way to address the prob lem is providing affordable and aeeessible spay-neuter serviees to eontrol animal reproduetion. That realization led me to found Spay Neuter Charlotte, a non-profit or ganization affiliated with the Hu mane Allianee, one of the preeminent spay-neuter programs in the eountry. We have grown to be a $1.2 million organization with 25 employees. We have fixed 27.000 dogs and eats and pro vided basie medieal eare to 10.000 patients. We have two elinies, in NODA and in Pineville, and are exploring the possibility for a third in Mooresville.” When asked what inspires her. with every day.” Bernstein was asked how she defines “satisfaetion,” and she said, “To me satisfaetion is the tremendous amount of eonfidenee I have in our staff, knowing that every day we are providing exem plary medieal serviees and eus- tomer eare to our patients and elients while at the same time making a true impaet on the num ber of homeless animals in our eommunity.” Bernstein’s responses reprinted with permission from The Meck lenburg Times.^ Cary Bernstein (photo courtesy Spay Neuter Charlotte) she answered: “I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to make a real differenee in animal wel fare, an issue of great importanee to me and this eommunity. I love what I do and know how fortunate I am to have the opportunity to work every day for a eause that I believe in. My greatest inspira tions are the amazing elients we serve and the amazing staff I work Charlotte’s Adam Flitton Competing for World Beauty Fashion and Fitness Title By Beth Cherryman A 28-year-old man originally from Carpenders Park eompeted for the World Beauty Fashion and Fitness title in the 02 London.
