The Charlotte Jewish News - October 2015 - Page 20 New Jewish Learning Institute Course Being Offered by Ohr HaTorah Journey of the Soul: An Exploration of Life, Deaths and What Lies Beyond What is a soul? Where does it go after it departs this world? Do Jews believe in heaven and hell? Can souls eommunieate with us from the afterlife? How does rein- eamation work? Jewish Learning Institute of Charlotte offers a new eourse on the spiritual side of existenee. Journey of the Soul will inspire you to re main foeused on the parts of life that really matter; it will assist you in beeoming more in toueh with yourself, with your soul, and with your spiritual dimension; and it will help you diseover a newfound relationship with your loved ones lEWISH LEARNiNG IKSTITIITE § _ B"H \^l ^5 pet c\ass OJOP ;\cora® Fridays 11:30 am-12:15 pm Oct. 16-Dec. 18 k(no meeting on Nov. 27) For more info, contact 704-364-8395 or info@JP5onSardis.org Jewish Preschool on Sardis 6619 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC 28270 Following class, you are invited to stay for our all school Shabbat, 12:15-12:45pm Jewish Federation' OF GREATEB CHARLOTTE who are no longer here with us physieally. Some questions are universal to the human experienee. Is there life after death? What hap pens to the soul after we die? What is it like for those who have traveled over? These are but a few of the questions addressed in this eourse from the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI). Begin ning Oetober 27, JLI will present Journey of the Soul, a new six-ses sion eourse. Rabbi Yossi Groner of Ohr HaTorah, will eonduet the six eourse sessions at 7:30 on six eon- seeutive Tuesdays at Lubaviteh Edueation Center for the evening elasses. Rabbi Shlomo Cohen will begin on Wednesday Oetober 28, at 11 AM for six eonseeutive Wednesdays. “There’s a signifieant amount of eonfusion in the Jewish eom- munity about what happens to us when we die,” explains Rabbi Naftali Silberberg, the lead editor for the eourse from JLI’s eenter in New York. “Many ideas that orig inate in other religions and belief systems have been popularized in the media and are taken for granted by unassuming Jews. In Journey of the Soul, we elear up these miseoneeptions and intro- duee an authentieally Jewish ap- proaeh whieh is both surprising and refreshing.” Journey of the Soul provides spiritual insight into the soul’s journey through life, death, and beyond, as well as an- eient Jewish wisdom that sheds light on the philosophieal, emo tional, and praetieal aspeets of eoping with death and mourning. “Seienee knows the very little about the soul and what happens to it post mortem,” said Rabbi Groner. “It’s about what is truly valuable and meaningful in life whieh is relevant to everyone, and many in Charlotte have expressed their euriosity to learn about the topie, so we’re expeeting a good turnout.” Professor Sheldon Solomon of Skidmore College who eo- authored the book The Worm at the Core: On the Role of Death in Life eommented about the JLI eourse: “This eourse strikes me as a very fine juxtapo sition of aneient theologieal wis dom with eontemporary empirieal seienee. My sense is that this will be an interesting and rewarding edueational and personal experi enee.” Similar sentiments were ex pressed by other experts in the field, ineluding Professor Jeff Greenberg of University of Ari zona; Dr. Casey Skvore from the National Institutes of Health; Pamela Blair, eo-author of / Wasn’t Ready to Say Goodbye; and Bianea Nogrady, author of The End: The Human Experience of Death. The eourse is being offered in joint sponsorship with the Wash ington Sehool of Psyehiatry, en abling medieal and mental health professionals to earn up to 7.5 AMA, APA, CBBS, and ASWB eontinuing edueation eredits for their partieipation. Like all previous JLI programs. Journey of the Soul is designed to appeal to people at all levels of Jewish knowledge, ineluding those without any prior experienee or baekground in Jewish learning. All JLI eourse s are open to every one in the greater Charlotte eom- munity. Interested students may eall 704-366-3984 or visit www.myJLI.eom for registration and other eourse-related informa tion.
