Charlotte Jewish News - March 2016 - Page 25 The Power of Women Who Do By Sandra Goldman, president, Charlotte Chapter of Hadassah You all know about Hadassah’s fairly new tag line “Hadassah, the power of women who do.” I want to talk to you about the real power of us women and Hadassah as an organization standing behind eaeh and every member. As many of you know by now, my breast ean- eer has returned after just five years. Now I have a ehoiee: I ean pity myself, eurl up into a fetal po sition, expeet the worst and ery my eyes out; or I ean onee again look at this as a stumbling bloek, fight this ugly disease with all my might, edueate along the way and go on with my life beeause it is beautiful. If you know me, you know my ehoiee. Yes, you are eor- reet, I do and move on. Life is too preeious to be sorry, too mueh en joyable than to ask “why me?” Henrietta Szold onee said: “In the life of the spirit there is no ending that is not a beginning.” How true is this and that is one of the rea sons why I got involved with our Breast Caneer Researeh Fundraiser Celebrate the TaTas. I urge you this year to support all our efforts to raise funds for HMO but espeeially this one beeause it is obviously a eause dear and per sonal to me. Remember, it is im portant to have purpose and determination beeause effort is not enough to make a real life. It also is important to have a support system and how wonderful have all my Hadassah sisters been so far. It is obvious to me that no one ean or should do this journey by themselves. As my son, Noah observed when he returned from his solidar ity mission during Operation Pro- teetive Edge: “Hadassah is really there for everyone, ineluding the little aeeidental guy around the eomer.” I too made this observa tion. I had to make a ehoiee for my treatment plan and I deeided to eontaet Hadassah in Jerusalem to find out if there is a person who eould help me understand the drugs better so that I eould make a more edueated deeision. In the proeess, I found out that one of the suggested drugs was in faet devel oped at Hadassah. How ineredible is that. Within twelve hours I re- eeived an email to eall the Diree- tor of Ein Kerem Hospital and so I did. As I explained my situation to him he pointed me in the diree- tion of the treatment that the Levine Caneer Institute right here in Charlotte suggested. Even though this Israeli doetor was in volved in developing the other drug, he told me it was not for me. I feel so humbled and at the same time blessed to be part of this amazing women’s volunteer or ganization. How amazing to get sueh a response and help when you really need it and you reeeive it beeause you are one of Hadas sah’s women. That’s where it all stems from: the power, the pas sion, and the purpose. So let’s do and eontinue supporting this one of a kind organization who owns one of the biggest hearts I know. ^ Mazel Tov & Congratulations Barbara and Jerry Levin Honored by Israel Bonds Charlotte residents Barbara and Jerry Levin reeeived the Israel68 Award at the Israel Bonds Interna tional Prime Minister’s Club Din ner held January 31 in Boea Raton, FL. In a video message, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Ne tanyahu eongratulated Israel Bonds on its 65th anniversary and ealled the organization’s feat of surpassing $1 billion in U.S. sales for three eonseeutive years an “outstanding aehievement.” Fred Zeidman, ehairman of the Israel Bonds National Campaign Advi sory Couneil, and aetress Fran Dreseher hosted the event. ^ From left to right: Israel Bonds president and CEO Izzy Tapoohi, Actress Fran Dreseher and Fred Zeidman, chair- Bonds Chairman of the Board Richard Hirsch, Barbara Levin, Jerry man of the Israel Bonds National Campaign Ad- Levin and Fred Zeidman, chairman of the Israel Bonds National visory Board. Providence Day, Sasha, 4“’ grade Temple Affiliation: Temple Israel WhyWe Chose CJDS My husband and I first looked at CJDS when our oldest daughter applied to kindergarten. I was familiar with the advantages of a day school education; whereas my husband was more circumspect about how this would benefit our child. What we discovered about CJDS was astounding. There were no leather couches or glossy brochures. Just Mariashi's unapologetic strength that she will draw forth the best from each child she was entrusted with and bring them to their full potential. We met the teachers. Without exception, every teacher takes so much joy in teaching. From kindergarden through 5th grade, each teacher was genuinely enthusiastic to come to school every morning and see'their kids.'CJDS's core curriculum is second to none, either the same or surpassing other private schools'curricula. But without doubt, meeting the 5th grade student ambassadors was the highlight of our introduction to the school. The students were poised and comfortable in their own skin. The fifth graders remarked about how the teachers met each student at their individual level for each subject. CJDS teachers and administrators are truly invested in the personal and academic growth of each student. What We Continue to Love About CJDS What's not to love? Everything that we liked about the school has been demonstrated in a thousand ways over the years that our children have attended GDS. The academics continue to be exceptional. The Judaic studies become a moral compass and a code of ethics that our girls internalize and use as a guide in their daily lives. Most of all, the teachers instilled our girls with a love of learning that continues to blossom. Choosing CDS has been a fabulous decision for our children and our family, and I suspect we have not begun to realize the rewards.
