With the hot months eoming we will be adding new shade struetures on eaeh of the playgrounds. One of the main fo- euses of early Childhood Eduea- tion to bring the elassroom learning environment outdoors. In addition to the two new shade struetures we will be enhaneing the playground with the follow ing: * musieal eomponents: inelud ing bongo drums, merry xylo phone, lady bug kettle drum, and a gloekenspiel * mud kitehen * ehalk board area * renovating the hill slide One of the eomponents we will be adding to our presehool play ground is a mud kitehen. In the ar- tiele, “Making a Mud Kitehen for Mud Day” by Jan White and Menna Godfrey, the authors, state: “A mud kitehen or eafe ineludes elements of both the mueh-loved domestie eomer and baking from indoor play, whieh are then hugely enriehed through the spe- eial nature of being outside. Bringing a friend a eup of tea or mixing a eake is serious play for young ehildren.” The ehildren at CJP will have the opportunity to engage in the following aetions in our new mud kitehen. Filling - pouring - emptying - transferring - mixing - stirring - whisking - frothing - seooping - ladling - handling - molding - patting - smoothing - mark-mak ing - throwing - splatting - splashing - sharing out - serving - foraging - seleeting - pieking - eolleeting - gathering - garnish ing - shredding - erushing - mashing - grinding - measuring - adding - brewing - sieving - fil tering - separating - pipetting - and deeanting! Kustanowtiz In May, the Jews have three “Yoms” (days). Not in the literal sense; Jewish months have 29-30 days eaeh month. But this month, three days merit their own speeial names: Yom HaShoah (Holoeaust Memorial Day), Yom HaZikaron (Memorial Day), and Yom Ha’Atzmaut (Israel Inde- pendenee Day). All three are late additions to Jewish observanee, having been instituted over the last half eentury or more to eom- memorate events sinee World War II. But the lat ter two “Yoms” are ob served eonseeutively and eonstitute a swing aeross the emotional divide be tween extreme sadness and extreme happiness. This May 10 is Yom HaZikaron, the memorial day for those who have died in Israel’s wars. Throught the eountry, a siren sounds; wherever they are, Israel’s eitizens stand quietly for the duration of the siren. Every thing stops. Loeal synagogues and eultural eenters hold memorial serviees. Radio broadeasts eenter on eeremonies all over the eountry in memory of the fallen. They were all someone’s ehildren, and died so that Israel eould be free and peaeeful. The very next day. May 11, is Yom Ha’Atzmaut, a day of eele- bration. Israel Independenee Day is marked as an offieial holiday; there is no sehool, and jubilant students take the day to frolie in the parks of their eountry, partiei- pating in barbeeues, daneing, and enjoying their day off. What are we to make of sueh a rapid emotional switeh over a two-day period? Esther D. Kustanowitz The Talmud tells a story of four rabbis who are walking in Jerusalem. They happen upon the ruined heaps of the holy Temple, whieh are desolate, and three of them begin to ery. The fourth. Rabbi Akiva, laughs instead. The other three ask. Why are you laughing when the Temple has been destroyed, as God had prom ised it would be? Rabbi Akiva ex plains that if the first part of God’s promise, that the Temple is in ruins, has eome true, then as suredly the seeond part of God’s promise, that the Temple will be restored to its former glory, will also eome to pass. Today, Israel suffers daily easu- alties. In this latest round of personal attaeks on eity streets, young ehildren, nursing mothers, elderly immigrants, tourists, residents, and visitors are all un uniformed, unprepared silent soldiers, who don’t even know they’ve enlisted until they are wounded or worse. A lot ean happen in a few months, even more from year to year. Bu the future ean turn on a dime, in an instant, in a heartbeat. The transition from Yom HaZikaron, Memorial Day, to Yom Ha’Atzmaut, In dependenee Day, teaehes us that although the pages of our history, whether tragie or joy ous, are bound together in ehronologieal order, the book always has room for more pages. If there is tragedy and suffering one day, we have to trust that there will be joy and redemp tion another. As Searlett O’Hara might have said, “Tomorrow is another Yom.”^ Esther D.
