JCRC Fall Lecture and Speaker Series to Kick Off on
September 14 with Dr. Daniel Gordis

Leeture on Wednesday, Septem
ber 14 at 7 PM in the Sam Lemer
Center for Cultural Arts at Shalom
Park. Our Annual Fall Leeture
will serve as the kiek off for our
2016-2017 JCRC Speaker Se
ries.
Our featured guest speaker will
be Dr. Daniel Gordis, eurrently
one of the single most popular
speakers on Israel to Ameriean
Jewish audienees. Dr. Gordis is
the Senior Viee President and the
Koret Distinguished Fellow at
Shalem College in Jerusalem and
author of numerous books on Jew
ish thought and eurrent events in
Israel. In 2014, the Jerusalem
Post listed him as one of the
world’s 50 most influential Jews.
Sinee moving to Israel in 1998,
Dr. Gordis has written and lee-
tured throughout the world on Is
raeli soeiety and the ehallenges
faeing the Jewish state. His writ
ing has appeared in magazines
and newspapers ineluding the
New York Times and the New Re
public. Dr. Gordis’s books have
reeeived numerous awards. He
won the National Jewish Book
Award for Saving Israel-How the
Jewish People Can Win A War
That May Never End. Gordis’s
next book, a history of the State of
Israel, titled, Israel: A Concise
History of a Nation Reborn will
be published in the fall of 2016.

priee of Jewish statehood. Is Israel
really worth the eost?” providing

Join Us at This Year’s Annual Memorial Service October 9
It’s that time of the year again,
when the wail of the shofar is
about to rise, signaling the start of
the Jewish New Year. Eaeh High
Holy Day season, all over the
world, a memorial serviee is held
on the Sunday between Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The
Board of the Hebrew Cemetery
Assoeiation invites everyone to
our Hebrew Cemetery on 1801
Statesville Road for our eommu-
nity’s Annual Memorial Serviee
on Sunday, Oetober 9 at 10:30
AM. Attend the serviee, tour the
grounds, and enjoy the results of
the beautifieation at our beloved
eemetery with your own eyes.
Our Annual Memorial Serviee
is a speeial time to honor, eele-
brate, and embraee those of our
loved ones who are no longer with
us. In the spirit of repentanee and
renewal, visiting the graves of
beloved relatives or other
tzadikkim (righteous people) in
spires us to live in aeeordanee
with our aneestors’ ideals and eel-
ebrate and honor the lives of those
departed.
Our serviee is unique, as it is
the only time during the year
where all greater Charlotte area
Rabbis and Cantors eonduet a
serviee together. With the erowd
of 250 or more, Kaddish will be
reeited and the names of this
year’s departed loved ones will be
read aloud. Board President Brian
Yesowiteh will introduee every
one to the serviee. This year’s an
nual memorial serviee ehair,
Miehael Littauer, will speak about
the grounds improvements. Enjoy
the program in eomfort in ehairs
under our tent.
The eemetery’s holy grounds
have been providing peaee of
mind and spiritual eomfort to the
Jewish eommunity for nearly 150
years. As Charlotte’s oldest insti
tution, our Hebrew Cemetery As
soeiation invites you to attend this
year’s serviee again rain or shine.
Last year we introdueed you to the
eompleted memorial building.
After the serviee, we invite you to
stay, visit your loved ones, tour
our grounds, eheek out the new
memorial plaques inside the
Mindy Ellen Levine Chapel, visit
the Goreliek Gathering Room,
and retreat and experienee the
peaee and beauty of the Ellis and
Lena Berlin Family Room.
We weleome all and eneourage
you to join and partieipate with us
