The Charlotte Jewish News - November 2016 - Page 11 Legacy Story Wilma and Gerson Asrael Wilma and Gerson Asrael are among the 350 individuals and families in our community who have created 720 unique legacy gifts to support its fu ture. Please take the time to read their story and thank them for their generosity. It is our hope that you will be in spired and encouraged to join them and others who have cre ated legacy gifts to help sus tain our Jewish community. By Wilma Asrael Gerson and I were bom in Bal timore and were raised in kosher orthodox homes. Gerson’s family met every Saturday night for a deli dinner at his maternal grand parents’ home, and every Sunday, my family visited our grandpar ents and other elose relatives. We were both raised valuing family and Jewish organizations whieh we learned to support with time and money. We met on our first day at Bal timore’s Forest Park High Sehool and we married 12 years later, in 1960. Gerson graduated from the University of Maryland medieal sehool and I beeame a registered oeeupational therapist. Our first ehild was bom in Houston, TX, where Gerson was a resident in urology. After two years in Bethesda, MD, where Gerson served a required military stint as a urologist at the Naval Hospital, we moved to Charlotte. From 1966-1998, Gerson praetieed at the multi-speeialty Nalle Clinie. I brought Lamaze ehildbirth and La Leehe League (breastfeeding ad- viee and assistanee) to the Caroli- Create Uoi^Jewisn An FCJC program Our Jewish Community’s Newest Legacy Gifts We thank the following indi viduals/families who have re- eently informed our eommunity, through Foundation for the Char lotte Jewish Community (FCJC) or one of the ten Create Your Jew ish Legaey eommunity partners, that they have ereated a legaey gift to support the future of Charlotte’s Jewish eommunity or added an organization to their legaey plan. There are now 350 individuals/ families throughout our Jewish eommunity who have ineluded a loeal Jewish organization in their legaey plans ereating 720 unique legaeies. Charlotte’s Jewish eom munity now has estimated future gifts of more than $25 million. We weleome our newest donors into our eommunity’s Book of Life Soeiety: Anonymous (1) Joy and Neal Golub Michelle Goodman Christy and Andy Horwitz Melvin Segal Phil Solomon nas, serving for eight years as their first state eoordinator. I also worked as a eonsultant in sexual ity and disability for 12 years at Charlotte Rehabilitation Hospital and then was in private praetiee as a sexuality and relationship ther apist. Charlotte’s Jewish eommunity weleomed us from the beginning. We immediately joined Temple Israel where all four of our ehil- dren beeame B’nai mitzvah (with Rabbi Riehard Roeklin). Gerson volunteered his time as a lay Mohel. He never eharged for this serviee, though it was joked that he aeeepted tips from multiple generations of Jews in Charlotte. In 1970, we helped organize the Hebrew Aeademy, where I volun teered and Gerson served for sev eral years as president. Over the years, we have volunteered our time and supported many other Jewish organizations. The most soul satisfying for me was the Butterfly Projeet whieh I heard about from a friend in California and whieh I helped eoordinate from eoneeption to dedieation of the Butterfly Seulpture in 2010 in memory of 1-1/2 million Jewish ehildren who perished in the Holoeaust. We moved to Atlanta in 2014 to be eloser to our ehildren, Miehele, Mindy, and David and five of our grandehildren. We visit Joel and our other two grandehil dren in Denver often. When we left Charlotte, we felt it was im portant to leave a legaey gift to the Charlotte Jewish Community that we so loved. ^ IT y PIEDMONT PLASTIC SURGERY & DERMATOLOGY www.pp5d.com Call to reserve your spot today: SEoi/e QAiitti QJou/i Join us on one of the following days and experience beautiful results: 0^if/tgc(oy, c_Afoi^. 10 c_Afoi^. 11 704.344.8846 309 S.
