Published monthly except July An affliate of: The Jewish Federation '5^5' OF GREATER CHARLOTTE Remembering Shimon Peres By Inbal Ozeri, Com munity Shlicha After spending the month of August with my family in Israel, I am now baek in Char lotte settling into this amazing eommunity. We’re finally baek to work after the late high holidays. It’s been a little over a month sinee Shimon Peres passed away. It was extremely sad for me sinee he was the last politieian from the first government of Israel. He was a Prime minister, a minister, a President, and held a Nobel Prize of Peaee for his great eontribution to try and ereate world peaee (or at least Middle Hannah Eccleston, guest speaker Rebecca Gerger, Hansen, Andie Sly, and Inbal Ozeri. East peaee). I felt really funny trying to deal with my daily work and eurrent projeets and it was really hard for me to foeus on that and let go of Inbal’s Hebrew High class. sueh sad news. I had to teaeh Hebrew High that night and had already invited a speeial speaker (Beeea Gerger) to eome and share her amazing story with my elasses. But I eouldn’t just let it go and not even mention it. So I talked to the speaker who’s an Ameri- ean Israeli so I was sure she would understand, and she did, she sup ported and agreed with Sophia [jie that we had to talk about it. The last 10 minutes of our lesson we talked about Shimon Peres and we lit a Ner Neshama (eandle) and read the Kaddish together. It was very emotional and powerful. Another thing that really helped me feel more proud than sad was that President Obama ordered U.S. flags to be flown half-mast in honor of Shimon Peres. In faet, it is only the seventh time that the Ameriean flag has been flown at half-mast for a non-Ameriean who passed away, and the seeond Israeli (the first one was Itzhak Rabin). Hearing and seeing that, really made me proud. These are amazing things that I wouldn’t had the ehanee to even hear about if I wasn’t here. I want to thank this amazing eommunity for existing and giving me the op portunity to be part of for two years. ^ Jewish Federation OF GREATER CHARLOTTE CONTENTS Federation News PP-1-4 Dining Out p. 14 Women’s News p. 1 Jewish Community Center.... pp. 16,17 Schools PP- 4, 5 Youth Visions p. 19 Jewish Family Services PP- 7-8 Synagogues/Congregations.... pp.20-24 Community News pp. 8-14 Women’s News p. 25 I would like to make a contribution to demonstrate my support of The Charlotte Jewish News.
