The Charlotte Jewish News - December 2016 - Page 19 A Weekend with Joe Buchanan By Andrea Kaplan Temple Kol Tikvah in David son had the privilege of spending a weekend listening to the inspir ing musie of Joe Buehanan last month. Joe is a touring Jewish Amerieana artist from Texas. He has been heard in eommunities around the US, at the URJ Bien nial and at NewCAJE. His debut album, Unbroken, was produeed by Jewish Blues pioneer Saul Kaye. Joe’s musie eombines ele ment of eountry, folk and roek and tells personal stories of both strug gle and triumph. His love of Ju daism is evident in the passion he brings to eaeh performanee. Joe shared his personal story of eon- version to Judaism and how that has shaped his musie that he shared with the eongregation. On Friday evening, he helped lead a song-filled Shabbat serviee. The next evening, Joe inspired a erowd of families for an outdoor eommunity eoneert and musieal Havdalah serviee. It was a beauti ful sight to wateh the young and young at heart join together as one for the evening. During Havdalah, everyone joined together singing the words, “It’s a big world, big world, big world outside this light. We’re a small town, small town, small town here tonight.” As the eommunity sat in lawn ehairs, en joying a beautiful evening with new and old friends, it truly was a small town eommunity feel. On Sunday, Joe joined the religious sehool students for some Jewish roek. What a treat for all of the students. The ehildren spent time with Joe in small groups and he tailored his songs to the different age groups. It was a perfeet week end of love, inspiration, and eom munity through musie. This event was a proud presentation of the Goldring/ Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life and the Jew ish Couneil of Lake Norman.
