The Charlotte Jewish News - March 2017 - Page 9 In an Era Where Competition Rules the Day, Temple Beth El and Temple Israel Choose Collaboration By Laura Bernstein, Ed.D, Exec utive Director, Temple Beth El and Glenda Bernhardt, MSW, Executive Director, Temple Israel How do we deal with the eon- stant eompetition for members, programs, and teaehers? How do we eoordinate worship times at High Holidays? When do we share information about systems, proeedures, and operating proto- eol that eati be helpful to eaeh other without revealing propri etary information? In 2015, we joined the Shalom Park Partner Professional Team within six months of eaeh other. Although our eolleetive tenure is under four years, we both stepped into our roles of Exeeutive Diree- tor with an open mind and a broad view of our responsibility to our greater eommunity. We have ap- proaehed eaeh other from a posi tion of partnership, and we think both of our eongregations have benefited. We have ehosen not to view our roles as eompetitive. Beeause we are on the same eampus to gether, we have a unique opportu nity to share ideas and eollaborate on many important matters. Synagogue eollaboration is not neeessarily new. Examples of our synagogues’ long-time eollabora- tions are seen in our Charlotte Jewish Presehool and our Consol idated Hebrew High Sehool. Re- eent efforts have been around issues of seeurity, and programs sueh as the Global Day of Jewish Learning. Our synagogues’ annual eele- brations of our teaehers have his- torieally happened in the Spring within weeks of eaeh other. This year we have the opportunity to eelebrate together and with the en tire eommunity as we honor Roz Cooper for her years of dedieation and serviee as the Direetor of our Consolidated Hebrew High Sehool program. We invite the entire eommunity to join us as we reeognize our teaehers, eelebrate Roz Cooper, and weleome Dan Niehols as he joins us for a weekend of eelebra- tion together. ^ TEMPLE BETH EL temple Israel )udaHmfo( {he2\st ceirtury Join Us for a Weekend of Collaboration Recognizing Our Teachers Celebrating Roz Cooper Welcoming Dan Nichols Friday, March 10 at Temple Beth El 6:15 PM - Preneg 7 PM - Joint Temple Beth El and Temple Israel Serviee hon oring our teaehers and Roz Cooper, featuring Dan Niehols and eombined synagogue ehil- dren’s ehoir Celebratory Oneg immediately following worship Saturday, March 11 at Temple Beth El 9 AM - Temple Beth El Congre gational Shabbat Workshop 10:15 AM - Temple Beth El Congregational Bruneh 11 AM - Temple Beth El Con gregational Shabbat featuring Dan Niehols with our Teen Voeal Ensemble, Teen Band Saturday, Mareh 11 at Temple Israel 9:30 AM - Temple Israel Serv iee honoring our teaehers and Roz Cooper, followed by spe- eial eommunity-wide Kiddush 10 AM - Temple Israel Junior Congregation featuring Dan Niehols (teaehers, students, and parents invited to attend) 7 PM - Joint Temple Israel and Temple Beth El Purim Celebra tion with Havdalah, sehpiel, and abbreviated megillah read ing, featuring Dan Niehols in eoneert at Temple Israel Temple Kol Tikvah of Lake Norman is Traveling to Israel Congregants of Temple Kol Tikvah in Davidson, NC, under the leadership of Rabbi Miehael Shields, have banded together to organize the first eongregational Israel trip from the Lake Norman area. Plans eall for departure to Tel Aviv on Oetober 22, 2017. The trip is open to anyone who wishes to experienee Israel first hand. Young or old, Jewish or not, first timer or a repeat traveler, everyone is weleome to join in this unique experienee. The trip itinerary is robust and ineludes the “essential Israel” stops as well as some unique op portunities sprinkled throughout. We have worked diligently to build a trip that is rieh in experi- enees, but modest in eost. The final eost per partieipant depends on the number of partieipants. The more people we have, the lower the eost for everyone. We expeet the eost to range from $3400- 4100 per partieipant (ineluding airfare). This ineludes the flights from Charlotte, NC, to Tel Aviv, nine days and eight nights in premium hotels and Kibbutz guesthouses, group travel and sightseeing throughout Israel with a eertified tour guide, most meals, and other amenities. The touring in Israel is oper ated by Vered HaSharon Travel and Tours (VeredGo.eom), an Is raeli eompany with 40 years ex perienee in the travel industry. Stateside arrangements are through the Mann Travel Ageney (MannTravels.eom) who is help ing with all the organizational and managerial aspeets of the trip. We weleome the Jewish eom munity of greater Charlotte, as well as family and friends, to join us in this amazing life-ehanging experienee.
