The Charlotte Jewish News - September 2018 - Page 19 Temple Solel Seeks Biblical King’s Advice on Time Whether speaking with a close friend or even someone we bare ly know, a common statement is, “Where has the time gone?” or “How can half the year be over?” For some of ns, it is even worse becanse we might not even know what day of the week it is. It’s a wonder we can keep everything in order nsing both onr cnltnr- al Hebrew calendar by the way of Babylonian inllnence or snc- cnmbing eqnally to the calendar nsed by the general popnlation snrronnding ns. No matter which calendar we nse, there are only 24 honrs in each day, so how we chose spend onr time impacts ev ery day of the life we have been given as a precions gift. King David reflects and writes in Tehillim (Psalms) 90:12, “So teach the nnmber onr days, so that we shall acqnire a heart of wisdom.” Qnoting one piece of a text can be misleading; however, and in this particnlar writing there are references to God’s anger and longing for a time where we make better choices so onr work is established. While today that “wrath” might come in the form of feeling iimer tnrmoil regarding onr schednles, it is an opportnni- ty to learn from those who came before ns. Jnly is the flscal restart for most of onr synagognes. At Tem ple Solel onr new Board and Committee Members were voted in at onr aimnal meeting in Jnne: President-Shelley Pawlyk; Vice President-Ron Weller; Treasnr- er-Jan Rose; Secretary-Stevie Illustration from The Driver Is Red - Artist Jared Callahan Rivers; Ritnal Office and Lay Leader-Rnss Cobe. Onr commit tee chairs are: Membership Com- mittee-Gordon Einsenberg; Car ing Committee Chairs-Linda and Mnrray Simon; Events Commit tee Chair-Tanya Trachtenberg; Social Action Committee Chair- Carol Hahn; Pnblicity Committee Chair-Al Rogat; Israel Commit tee Chair-Shelley Pawlyk; Social MediaWonth Gronp Committee Chairs-James and Jnlia Fox A most interesting conversa tion came np mnltiple times when people discnssed how they were ntilizing their time. They weren’t happy abont it. Two different peo ple said, “1 am spending endless honrs on my HOA Board and it’s miserable.” The one realization that we often overlook in well-do ing is risk of time lost versns re ward. Are we investing onr time like we wonld dollars? It certaiifly makes ns look at time a little dif ferently when there is desired re- tnm on onr investment. Whether we are working, playing, travel ing, with family or helping some one or an organization shonldn’t there be a payoff? Whether the re- snlt is a goal accomplished, feel ing valned, developing relation ships or being a part of a bigger vision, it is a privilege to have a choice. At Temple Solel, we often tell one another we like spending time together. Onr indoor picnic was a great snccess. A special thank yon to Blooming Einstein’s, Tanya Trachtenberg, for being so gen- erons with her space and all the great prizes. At onr gathering, Lanrabree Monday and Wendy Weinberger sponsored the show ing of “The Driver Is Red” direct ed by Randall Christopher - an award wiiming, cleverly illnstrat- ed 15-minnte fllm based in Ar gentina, in 1960, describing how secret agent Zvi Aharoni hnnts down one of the highest ranking Nazi war criminals on the ran. Link: http://thedriverisred.com. The fllm is important becanse it provides ns with an example how a man nsed his time to bring forth jnstice with an nnderlying mes sage it didn’t matter how long it took or how old this Nazi crimi nal was when captmed. The risk in this case was absolntely worth the reward, not jnst for Zvi, bnt for jnstice to onr people. In Solomon’s wisdom he wrote in Proverbs 3:5-6- “Trast in the Lord with all yom heart. And lean not npon yom own nnderstand- ing. In all yonr ways acknowl edge God, and God will direct yonr paths.” No matter onr age, it may be time for ns to recalibrate so we know we are on a directed path. The yonnger the better. In a mod em qnote Sarah Dessen writes, “There comes a time in every life when the world gets qniet and the oifly thing left is yonr own heart. So yon’d better learn to know the sonnd of it. Otherwise yon’11 nev er nnderstand what it is saying.” What’s even better is when we can share these jonmeys together as a commnnity. Temple Sole! holds Shabbat services at 7 PM the second and fonrth Fridays of each month. We hope to meet yon soon in the commnnity room at St. Philip Neri Catholic Chnrch, 292 Mnim Road, Fort Mill.
