Last year, there were only two reported incidents involving An- tisemitic hate speech. Since the start of this academic year, 1 have already received seven. This is an unprecedented trend that has caught our community off guard. Many students, par ents and professionals are un clear of how to discuss the topic of Antisemitism or who to noti fy. While 1 am actively working with partner agencies to provide additional educational tools and advocacy trainings for our com munity, here is a list of reporting procedures and resources: What is Considered Antisemitic Activity? Antisemitic activity includes overt acts or expressions of an- ti-Jewish bigotry and hostility. Many incidents are not crimes. Activity is generally categorized as: * Expression - Written or verbal communication by groups or in dividuals, including public, elect ed, or religious figures. Includes publicly or privately directed letters, phone conversations, ar ticles, speeches, e-mail, or other Internet communication. * Vandalism - Desecration, van dalism, or other criminal activity against property. * Harassment, Threats, and As saults - Directed at individuals or institutions. * Discrimination - Employment, education, housing, or organiza tional membership. * Hate Group Activity - Ral lies, recruitment, or other ac tivities organized or sponsored by groups such as the Ku Klux Klan or other white supremacist groups. These are not exhaustive or exclusive. We encourage you to report all incidents. Reporting Incidents of Hate: Absolutely no one should be treated unfairly because of re ligion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender iden tity, national origin, or disability. Even if you feel your particular case requires no further action, having a written record helps to with statistical tracking of such incidents by local and national law enforcement and advocacy agencies. 1) Notify the school or busi ness where the incident took place - try to give as much detail as possible regarding the incident. Provide any documentation you may have regarding the incident and photographs if there is graffiti (Continued on page 11) CONTENTS Federation News PP- 1-3 Synagognes/Cong pp.15-19, 22, 23 Center for Jewish Edncation PP. 4, 5 Jewish Commnnity Center pp. 20, 21 Sne’s Book Shelf P-5 Dining Ont p. 23 Yonth Visions PP- 6, 8 Women’s News p. 25 Jewish Family Services PP- 9,11 Schools pp.25, 27-30 Commnnity News pp. 12-14 Tn BiShevat p. 31 I would like to make a contribution to demonstrate my support of The Charlotte Jewish News.
