The Charlotte Jewish News - October 2020 - Page 5 Cultivating our Humanity with Author, Educator, and Rabbi Ariel Burger Jewish Federation OF GREATER CHARLOTTE “No human race is superior, no religious faith is inferi or. All collective judgments are wrong. Only racists make them.” —Elie Wiesel Every year, the Center for Jewish Education proudly pro vides our Charlotte Jewish com munity two opportunities to read as a community accompanied by booktalks from award-winning authors. This year, our coun try and our community have been struggling with the novel COVID-19 pandemic as well as the ongoing issues of social and racial injustice. The Jewish Fed eration’s Center for Jewish Edu cation (CJE) and JCRC (Jewish Community Relations Council) are proud to have provided our community with a virtual series on the topic of racial justice and racism. In the face of an overwhelm ing tidal wave of bad news and finger-pointing, it is our be lief that what our community needs most right now are daily reminders of our better human selves, so that each of us can rise to this challenge. That is why this fall, our Federation’s CJE and JCRC have partnered for a community-wide read and fall lecture around the award-win ning book “Witness: Lessons from Elie Wiesel’s Classroom” by author, rabbi, artist, teacher and beloved student of Elie Wi esel. Make no mistake, this is not a book about the Holocaust! As a long-time student of Elie Wi esel, Ariel Burger captured the life wisdom of Elie Wiesel. Wi esel was a towering presence on the world stage — a Nobel lau reate, activist, adviser to world leaders, and the author of more than forty books, including the Oprah’s Book Club selection "Night." But when asked, Wie sel always said, “I am a teach er first.” In this profoundly thought-provoking and inspir ing book. Burger grants readers access to Wiesel’s lessons and teachings. It is an immensely hopeful book, underscoring how much more richly we can expe rience our humanity because of Wiesel’s work. “Witness” serves as a moral education, a primer on education against in difference and our roles in mak ing the world a more compas sionate place. Don’t miss this opportunity to be inspired! This virtual event will take place on Thursday, October 29 at 8:00 p.m. For more information and to reserve your spot visit www. i ewishcharlotte.org The opposite of love is no! hale, it’s indiflcrcnce.
