PAGE 2 Q-Notes ■ June 1986 New Lifers Premiere "Bent" In Charlotte St*' (S New Life MCC's New Life Players will present the renowned gay- themed play "Bent" at Spirit Square's 100-seat Entertainment Place June 26, 27 and 28; and may schedule more performances if the original three sell out. The production is the Charlotte premiere of the famous drama. The Saturday, June 28, perfor mance will be signed for the deaf. Joe Schommer, who recently moved to Charlotte from Kansas City, will direct a group of local actors in Martin Sherman's searing drama, which starred Richard Gere in its Broadway run. IHiis ■h ■ Hi m Sili m The intensely emotional play tells the story of two men who fall in love in a Nazi concentration camp. The entire second act takes place at the camp's rock pile, where prisoners pass the time meaninglessly moving rocks from one place to another. Throughout, Sherman's use of small incidents builds to a powerful, gripping climax. The Scorpio's Winning Softballers Celebrate On Gay Pride Day 1981 Tom Caudle as Max and Alan Poindexter as Horst play the pro tagonists. Other actors are Mark Taylor as Rudy, Dean Shull as Wolf and as the captain. Art Fleschner as the officer, Mickey Taylor as Greta, and Don Watkins as Uncle Freddie and as the kapo. He also appeared in three pro ductions of "Bent" with the Unicorn Theatre. "It's a very touching, gripping show about the persecution of gays and Jews, a story of survival," he said. "The audience gets very in volved. Part of the proceeds will be do nated to the Metrolina AIDS Project. PRIDE WEEK! The last week in June is usually chosen for Pride Week because the Stonewall Riots, generally accepted as the birthing time of the modern gay activist movement, took place in New York in June, 1969. Charlotte's Pride Week will be its sixth observance dating back to 1981. Highlights of the week are a pic nic with softball at Bryant Park, a midweek banquet that doubles as the first presentation of the Carolin ian of the Year Award, and a wrap-up Carnival.
