PAGE 8 Q-Notes ■ September 1986 MCC's AIDS Prayer Vigil Scheduled By mark drum Associate Editor SUN MON TUBS WED THUR FRI SAT Rev. Art Fleschner of New Life Metropolitan Community Church is heading the Char lotte part of a national MCC effort to involve as many churches as possible in an AIDS Vigil of Piayer. Throughout the country, MCC churches are holding vigils and asking other churches to bring attention to the suffering of people with AIDS, and to pray for finding a cure and for helping PWAs. New Life MCC is sponsor ing, with the assistance of other religious leaders and organizations, a prayer line to be staffed for 54 hours around the clock from 7 p.m. Sept. 5 through 9 p.m. Sept. 7, the weekend of the national vigil. Fleschner's congregation is also supporting a series of worship services and semi nars to be held at the Unitar ian Church of Charlotte on Sharon Amity Road, begin ning at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19 and continuing through 9 p.m. Sept. 21. Featured speakers will be members of the medi cal community, Metrolina AIDS Project, and persons with AIDS. The weekend's emphasis is on informing the public about AIDS, its effects on patients and on people close to them. Call 373-1817 for more information concerning the Vigil. ■ ■ ■ Occasions, a catering service, will sponsor an "occasion" to support the AIDS Vigil of Prayer. For a $10 donation, those attending get a sumptuous buffet, including hors d'oeuvres, and may bring their own bottle. The buffet will take place at "Pine Haven at Trails End," 1900 Thur mond Place, on Sept. 6. Hors d'oeuvres will be served at 7 p.m. with the buffet beginning at 8. Hosts are Dean Shull and Dave Witt. Tickets will be limited and must be purchased by Sept. 2. Call 376- 3939 or 373-1817. Alternate location in case of rain is New Life MCC. ■ ■ ■ MCC/Charlotte's spiritual re newal/revival will be held Aug. 29-31 despite the Aug. 23 death of the father of the pastor scheduled to lead it. Popular preacher and lec turer Rev. Elder Jeri Ann Harvey, who pastored the founding MCC church in Los Angeles 1978-1985, will lead the three days of services, all to be inteipieted for the hear ing-impaired, at 4037 Independenc Blvd.: 7:30 p.tn. Aug. 29 and 30, and 11 a.m. Aug. 31 with an Aug. 30 rap group 1-4 p.m. The church's pastor. Rev. Lynn Guerra, said Rev. Harvey is a spiritual leader of unusual strength and insight. Call 563-5810 for more information. ■ ■ ■ Not surprisingly, the team with the most experience — Tags — won the Metrolina AIDS Project’s volleyball tournament at Tags Aug. 2 and 9, and MAP won, too, with $275 reve nue. Competitors representing the Brass Rail (second place) Oleens, Charades and Scorpios filled the tourney field. Players braved the summer's heat to benefit MAP. Con gratulations!
