December 1986 ■ Q-Notes PAGE 5 MUSIC With DOUG NEEMS Douff Neems, deejay at The Scorpio, holds a journalism degree from the Uni versity of North Carolina. Ever dashed to the record store to scoop up that hot new 12-inch you heard last night and suddenly realized you knew neither the name oi the artist nor the title ot the song? After searching through the record bins, you locate an employee and ex plain your dilemma. Inevitably, you wind up singing what you know of the song (your personal interpretation) and still no one has any idea of what the title could be. 1 hope this column will alleviate such incidents. I've chosen some of the cur rent and brand new releases that elicit favorable crowd response and have listed them. Most are available locally. Some, especially the imports, can only be obtained through specialty shops. Domestic Eneigizeis Dead or Alive's "Brand New Lover" continues to snowball, followed closely by Wang Chung, New Order, the Belle Stars and Bananarama. Harder to find, but well worth the search, are Linda Imperial's "Fire," Joan Faulkner's "I Don't Want To Talk About The Weather" and Desire's "Crazy Over You." Uiban-Oiiented The Pointer Sisters' "Gold Mine" is finally starting to make waves. So are Grace Jones, Sylvester and Samantha Fox (NOT the pom star!). Worth check ing out are Cameron Paul's re-edit of Jesse Johnson's "Crazay" and J.M. Silk's "I Can't Turn Around" (the essence of Chicago "house" music). From Abroad The Nasty Boyz' "I Was Made For Loving You" paces the import pack. which includes "Don't Pretend to Know" by Tapps, "Deliverance" by People Like Us and fast-riser Patty Ryan's "Stay With Me Tonight." Slightly Esoteric The Lover Speaks — "Every Lover's Sign," progressive funk with broad ap peal. Pet Shop Boys — "Suburbia" (remix), drama on vinyl. Pepper Watkins — "So Glad," a bit fluffy but worth a listen. Kraftwerk — "Musique Non-Stop" as the boys revise their electronics. Heavy Art of Noise influence. Jimmy Lifton — "I'm A Man," wonder fully percussive update of a classic. Cyndi Louper — "Change of Heart" (12-inch remix), the remix makes ALL the difference. A sure shot for clubs and airplay. Two Minds Crack — "Cry Cry Cry," quintessential modem dance music. Leah Landis — "Boys," resurrected cut from the first Beatles LP takes on a whole new meaning. Pick hit nationally. DOUG’S TOP TEN 1.
