The research, initiated in 1980 and funded by UNCC, is the first major study of this nature since the 1960s. Robinson, associate professor oi child and family development, presented preliminary findings at the February meeting of the Charlotte chapter of PFLAG. Early findings included re sponses from 400 of the 700 question naires mailed to families with gay chil dren. He told PFLAG that earlier research decades ago indicating that most gays suffer from emotional imbalance and depression was skewed because all 106 gays in that study were at that time in therapy for depression; the control group oi 106 heterosexuals were not. He admitted that his own research may be skewed in the other direction because respondents to his questionnaire were primarily mothers of gays.
