President, QCQ
Queen City Quordinators, a board of
members made of leaders of the gay
and lesbian groups in Charlotte, was
formed in 1981 to act as a liaison
between these groups and to raise
money for them. At that time, there
were only five gay and lesbian groups in
Charlotte and so QCQ was a great way
to tie the groups together with financial

Fish Cove. QCQ also sponsored the
train trip to Washington for the Na
tional March for Gay and Lesbian
Rights. Also, from its inception
through 1987, QCQ totally funded the
phone lines for The Gay and Lesbian
Switchboard of Charlotte and over the
last two years or so has given moneys,
in part or in whole, to every group that
requested money in writing, which was
the policy set for grants.
As for the last eight or ten months,
' QCQ has concentrated on improving
it’s publication Q-Notes. What little
money the organization has taken in, it
has used to support the paper, which
has been said to be the most important
- service of QCQ.
With this in mind and with a lot of
discussion among the board of QCQ,
other leaders in the community, and the
editorial staff of Q-Notes, it became
evident that with there now being close
to twenty-five gay and lesbian groups
and organizations in Charlotte that
communication and information was
what needed the most concentration. It
also became evident that these groups
or organizations are for the most part
financially self-sustaining or have the
ability and knowledge to raise money
on their own. Also in this discussion it
was noted that The Charlotte Leader
ship Coalition, an information sharing
group of leaders from different groups
and individuals in Charlotte’s gay com
munity started by QCQ in 1986, was
fulfilling the need for the different
groups and organizations to keep in
touch and let each other know what
they were doing.
In putting all of this in perspective,
the board of Queen City Quordinators
has concluded that the purpose of the
organization, raising money for and
acting as a liaison between all the other
gay and lesbian groups in Charlotte, is
now being handled by the individual
groups or through The Charlotte Lead
ership Coalition. For this reason QCQ
has given Q-Notes its independence,
now being totally run by its editorial
staff, and has fulfilled all of its other
purposes. As a result of this conclusloh,
QCQ will cease to operate effective
July 15, 1988.
It’s a dream come true for an organi
zation like QCQ to come to a time
when it can be said that the job is done.
The groups has helped the Charlotte
gay and lesbian communities come to
gether with a strong bond of unity not
even matched by some of the nation’s
larger cities. There is a strong and
viable gay community in Charlotte and
it is destined to go a long way fast.
Another positive aspect of QCQ’s
cease of operation is that it will allow
it’s board members to start new groups
or work with other groups in order to
play a more positive role in the gay and
lesbian communities of Charlotte.
