During the month of September, First Tues day, the Charlotte area gay and lesbian po litical organization, will have a voter regis tration drive. Although dates and locations are as yet unavailable, you can get more in formation by calling the group at 393-2536. Everyone is encouraged to register and vote and, as I undersmad it, you must register 30 days before the election. Get out and vote- it is the best way to ensure your future. A little birdie told us that the Musical Duo Romanofski and Phillips will be at New Life MCC on October 21. We don't have much information at this time but tune in here next month and we'll be able to give you more information or you can call the church at 365-2308. MCC Charlotte will be hosting a Spiri tual Renewal at the church from Oct. 21-23 by the Rev. Elder Jeri Ann Harvey. Rev. Harvey has been a moving force in the UFMCC Fellowship for many years. MCC Charlotte will also be having a pot luck supper on Sept. 24 at 6:30 at the church for members and vistors. Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) will hold its monthlly meeting on the second Thursday of the month (Sept. 8) at 7:30 pm at Christ Episcopal Church. Smith Q-Notes Staff Charlotte's gay and lesbian bowling league begins its third year of fun at 8:30 pm Monday, September 12. The league will agaain bowl at Coliseum Lanes on Inde pendence Boulevard, across from the old coliseum, every Monday night at 9 pm. The cost for three games will be about $6 plus shoe rental each week. Newcomers are welcome, from novice to experts. Last year's league had 24 members, including subs and was called, "Isn't That Special." "Sarah'sBoys" was the first league in 1986. The Metrolina AIDS Project (MAP) is now offering a bereavement support group for individuals who have had a loved one die from AIDS. The group will provide an opportunity for individuals who are grieving their loss to come together and share their experiences and insights and to provide support for one another. Alexis Stein and Howard Winokuer, who have extensive professional experience working with individuals and groups fol lowing a death, will facilitate the group. The first meeting of the group will be on Tues day, August 23,1988, from 7:30-9:00 pm, at the offices of the Metrolina AIDS Project. Thereafter, meetings will be held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. MAP also provides support groups for persons diagnosed with AIDS, persons who test positive for the HIV or who have AIDS Related Complex, and for Friends, Family, and Partners of persons with AIDS. Other MAP services include a hotline staffed 7:00- 10:00 pm Monday through Friday, which provides information about AIDS and refer rals to other services in the Charlotte area. Individuals who would like to attend the bereavement support group or who would like more information about this or other services, can call Metrolina AIDS Project at 333-2437. Switchboard Announces Fall Training The Gay and Lesbian Switchboard of Charlotte, sponsored by the Metrolina Community Services Project (MCSP), an nounced plans for a fall training session for new volunteers, Saturday and Sunday Octo ber 15 and 16 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm both days. The Gay and Lesbian Switchboard is an information, referral and peer crisis tele phone counseling service which is open from 6:30 to 10:30 pm seven nights a week. The training session, titled the "Counsel ing Skills Workshop," is open to anyone who wishes to participate. There is no commit ment to become a Switchboard volunteer. Class topics will include Crisis Interven tion, Listening Skills, AIDS and Safe Sex, Resource Familiarization and Referral Tech niques, and role-playing to provide "hands- on" experience. Volunteer counselors deal with callers in all sorts of situations. You don't know what problems you'll be faced with when the phone rings. But the training is designed to try to provide the skills necessary for the volunteer counselor to deal positively with whatever comes along, to expect the unexpected.
