Gantt — The Best Choice By Richard Epson-Nelms Q-Notes Staff We have long fought for the right to be heard. Many have been subjected to humili ation, injury and even death in that fight to have our wishes known and respected. This voting year marks a whole new era in our fight to be recognized as full and equal citizens of this country. This year we have demonstrated, through our intense work in our efforts to unseat Jesse Helms, that we are a force to be reckoned with. In terms of the Helms-Gantt race, win or lose (but we intend to WIN), we can only be proud of our commimity — locally, state wide and nationally for the efforts, financial help, time spent and for doing what was necessary for our candidate to win. Some times that meant not saying anything. But the job is not over! Now that people like Mandy Carter of the Senate Vote '90 campaign have done their work over the many, many months, it's time for people Uke you and me to do ours — VOTE. I hear that thousands of people have reg istered to vote this year, many of whom haVe registered directly in Gay/Lesbian commu nity activities — churches, bars, meetings, picnics — you name it. That is a great start but we need to follow through on ^t effort and on November 6th VOTE! And, while you're at it, pick up a friend and take her/him to the poll to vote. It would be pointless and a waste of time to try and list out all of the reasons that it is important to cast that vote this year but one over-arching reason looms over all of them — JESSE HELMS! But lest we make this just a negative campaign about Jesse Helms, we need to spend some time on what the alternative to Helms is. Harvey Gantt is a man wiio has for most of his life been a front-runner in many areas. He was the first black to graduate from Clemson University. He has been on the forefront in the civil rights battle and was the first black mayor of a large metropolitan Carolina city. During his mayorial races he campaigned in gay/lesbian bars and has been open about the positive rapport he has built with our community. Mr. Gantt stands for all that we have tried to attain in equal rights and equal protection in this country. He has openly campaigned for the right of women to make decisions concerning their own bodies — that's not to say that he condones abortions. That is to say that he stands for the right of women to make that awesome and personal decision for themselves. It is one thing to say that we want to get rid of Jesse Helms — which we do. But more important is the fact that we could not have come up with a better choice of persons to represent us and our interests — not only as gay/lesbian Americans, but as North Caro linians. Therefore, it is without hesitation that Q- Notes endorses the campaign of Harvey Gantt and urges all citizens of North Carolina to look long and hard at the candidates and their positions. We feel that the responsible choice is self-evident — HARVEY GANTT.
