Sleepy Poet Stuff
Sleepy Poet Stuff owners Dickson
Shreffler and Beryl Imboden
A Fuller Brush carpet sweeper full of but
tons and hair was the deciding factor that
brought about the creation of Sleepy Poet Stuff.
Dickson Shreffler, co-owner, had bought a used
carpet sweeper and realized that, “This thing is
full of memories. It’s not just an object. These
old buttons were once part of someone’s cloth-

Beryl Imboden, co-owner, had grown up
surrounded by antiques and her mother always
took her shopping in quaint little antique stores.
“I grew to love antiques. Old objects are com
fortable.” Beryl says, with a laugh, that she and
her life/business partner Dickson “had to go
into business out of self-defense. Our apartment was running over.”
Dickson and Beryl were both in retail management before opening their antique busi
ness four years ago. Dickson, a manager for CVS Drug Stores, still works to help finance the
business until things get going. They opened the Sleepy Poet Stuff store 1-1/2 years ago on
South Blvd, near Scaleybark. Dickson claims, “We have items to suit every budget. Prices
range from 50 cents to $3000. There is
something for everyone.”
Sleepy Poet Stuff also rents space to
other dealers. You can find anything from
mid-century and older furniture to col
lectibles and home accessories. Every
nook and cranny is loaded with items of
interest. Beryl held an antique mirror in
her hand, saying, “You know, someone
once used this mirror and brush set ev
ery day. See how old it is? This belonged
to someone’s grandmother. That makes
it personal.”
How did they come up with the name?
“Well, that’s a frequently asked question,”
replied Beryl. “At one time we both had
long commutes to work. Many evenings
we would sit in coffeehouses, when that
was the thing to do. We spent a lot of
time writing poetry, and reading, so we
nicknamed ourselves the Sleepy Poets.
When we decided to start the antique
business, the name stuck and thus the tide
