If anyone doubts this, compare the AOL
chat rooms some time. The lesbian room has
things in it like “Would you like to meet for
breakfast?” or “Looking for a new friend.” In
the guys room you,find “Smooth bottom is
ready now!” or “Looking for a 7* for hot rimes.”
Men, I think we should take a lesson from
the ladies. I may start hanging out with my les
bian friends more to pick up some pointers.

That’s 45 in het years
I frequently hear gay and lesbian couples say
phrases such as, “We’ve been together for six
months.” But more often than not, they qualify
that by adding, “But it feels more like six years!”
Single life is difficult enough. Add a partner
and the challenges rise exponentially. Since his
tory has not matured to the point where we
can get married and quietly raise children, to
say that society ages us prematurely is no joke.
Don’t be discouraged if you’ve only been
together a short while. Use the “Putting Up
With A Heterosexual Society” scale and it in
stantly redefines the days of your relationship.
Use the chart below to get a better idea of the

Not in the club
As the founder of Charlotte’s only black gay
organization [The Westside Project], I have to
say this. The latest issue of your paper made
me notice an ad for the club called Midnite til
Six. The dress code is so obviously racist and
discriminatory: “No headgear, no athletic ap
parel and no slobs.” Most people of color en
joy the diversity of their culture by displaying
all the different forms of dress. White people
don’t come to most clubs with headgear or ath
letic clothes, so who can they be directing it to?
And the part mentioning slobs, what in the hell
is that supposed to mean? Define “slobs.”
If I hadn’t worked for the management of
the short-lived Club Maze, I probably wouldn’t
be aware of their tactics for keeping black pa
trons out. They attempted to do this when we
opened Club Maze. The blacks involved ob
jected to that'dresS'policy because most of the
people that will come will be dressed in that
fashion. I understand dress policies, so don’t
try that on me. This is clearly a way for the
local white gay establishment to keep us away.
When it’s time for the fight for equal rights for
all gay people, they’ll need us to put up the
fight, but we are not good enough to socialize
with. I’m not talking about the few you see
sprinkled about in the club, who enjoy the com
pany of mostly white gay men.
Our organization is designed to look out for
instances like this; we will keep calling it out to
our people and those who fight injustice and
discrimination. My members do not frequent
clubs or bars that have covert racist policies and
we will make sure no one else does. V
