[-Notes 15: Out of the Past... was started through the efforts of Queen City Quoordinators, an umbrella and fundraising organization located in Charlotte. QCQ helped other GLBT groups. The first issue was pub lished in September 1983 and was in newsletter format on copy paper. After a couple of years, it ceased to be published. It is unclear why. In 1986, QCQ, still realizing the need and under the leadership of President Robert Sheets and experience of Don King, the newsprint version of Q-Notes was born. Fundraising events were held to help fi nance the paper. The largest event QCQ ever staged was the focus of the first Q-Notes . Newspaper in June 1986. The event was the Carolina Drummer Contest. The event was big news because it was the only preliminary to the National Drummer Contest on the East Coast. The winner, as noted in the July ’86 Q-Notes, was Butch Stevenson of Charlotte with Chuck Lance of Asheville first runner-up. Both men represented the Carolinas in San Francisco. Other news covered in this first Q-Notes newspaper was the play Bent staged by New Life MCC, Pride Week activities. Safe Sex Parties hosted by MAP and MCC-Charlotte starts a Sat urday Coffee Flouse.
