The big news in our July ’87 issue was that Metrolina AIDS Project (MAP) received a $33,000 grant from the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners. “To my knowledge, it’s the first time the county has ever done any thing related to the gay community,” said Les Kooyman, MAP executive director. Other news receiving coverage in July ’87 was Little Theatre’s production of As Is, a play about gay men dealing with AIDS, South Carolina Pride in Columbia, current Q-Notes publisher Jim Yarbrough becoming the presi dent of Queen City Quoordinators (QCQ) — the group that published the paper at that time — and Q-Notes-edkor Don fang being named Carolinian of the Year. The big news in the August ’87 issue in cluded an article on the National March on Washington scheduled for October 11 of that year, Charlottean Kevin Scott repre senting the Queen City in both the Mr. Hotlanta Contest, where he was awarded second runner-up, and the Mr. Gay America Contest, where he was named first runner-up. (Kevin would eventually go on to win Mr. Gay USA and found the Na tional Pageantry system.) September ’87 brought an announce ment that Robert Sheets, a former QCQ president, would run for Charlotte City Council. (Although he was not success ful, Sheets did garner 6 percent of the vote.)
