9-11: a year, a candle light vigil
to honor people and peace
David Dixon :
Fellowship Of Reconciliation, an inter
national, interfaith’ group dedicated to
nonviolent social change, and friends, will
hold a dusk-to-dawn vigil in Charlotte to
honor the lives of those who died September
11 and all victims of violence.
Speakers for the event include Keynote
Speaker, Rev. Mick Hinson, of the Metropolitan
Community Church of Charlotte; Rev. Jane
Esdale pastor of Baptist Peace Fellowship of
North America,' Muslim Student Association
member. There will be special music
throughout by Bibis Ellison, Michael Sharpe
and others.
The vigil is being organized in response to
a plea from The September Eleventh Families
for Peaceful Tomorrows to commemorate
September 11,2002 with peaceful events.
With this vigil, the gathering sets the tone
for a time of annual reflection — on peace, on
healing.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Wars are
poor chisels for carving out peaceful
tomorrows ... We must pursue peaceful ends
through peaceful means.”
The families came together out of a shared
feeling that their grief was not a cry for war.
Let September II be as a time for
communities around the world to unite in
renewed commitment to honor honoring of
those who lost their lives and in the
exploration of what it will take to create
peaceful tomorrows.
