Q - L 1 V I N G It’s kind of a drag PEMBROKE, N.C. — The University of North Carolina-Pembroke’s 10% Society cele brated its Pride Week Oct. 29-Nov. 1 with a VIBE fashion show, spiritual seminar and a first-ever drag show held as a fundraiser to provide needed monies to carry out 10%’s work over the year ahead. The society “encour ages the acceptance of all sexual orientations: gay, lesbian, bisexual and straight.” The drag show offered a glance into the LGBT culture and the show was the first ever in the city, county and on the campus. About 70 people (with a mixture of faculty, staff, stu dents and some community members) were there to satisfy their curiosity. Performers for the drag show were Dana St. James, Amaya and Jasmine Vaughn. According to an article published in the school’s “Around the Campus” and written by Kayloni Wyatt, assistant editor, Amaya said, “We’ve been to Duke, East Carolina, UNCG,UNC Chapel Hill, and many other schools... It may be a small crowd now, but trust me, in the following years it’s going to get bigger.” The seminar was lead by Rev. Micah Royal, a minister original ly from Fayetteville, N.C., who helps foster “planting” LGBT- affirming churches statewide. For more information about the 10% Society, email lwgrds05@yahoo.com.
