He would like to have the names of men here wh can play any band instrument. Mr. R. H. Armstrong, of the Pitts burgh Office, was with the fellows in the Purchasing Department for a week. Mr. Armstrong is quite a huntsman- specializing on wild turkeys and other game. Charlie Younts is a little overdue on his return from Fort Caswell. Of course, Uncle Sam doesn’t want to lose such a handsome soldier; but Badin would like to have his smiling face around. Sergeant J. P. Green has returned from Camp Sevier. Jimmie is showing what a good Carbon Plant man a former sol dier can make. Miss Gladys Allsbrook took a short vacation during the month. She had a very pleasant visit among relatives in Greensboro. Power-House Notes The Narrows Power-House crowd have been discussing the disposition of the vast amount of war material and sup plies that have been left on the hands of Uncle Sam. It has been suggested that several tons of T. N. T. could be used to advantage right here in North Carolina; for in stance, about two ounces of this high explosive, added to a little sugar and lye, with water sufficient to make one quart, would make a “sugar head “likker,” which while not having such an after effect would be equal to the best Stanley County product as far as the kick and “bughouse” results go. Several of the sawed-off shotguns would come in nicely for our boys on the dam, when harrassed by the curious, as in the case of the old gentleman who re marked, “My, it must have taken nearly all summer to build such a dam.” We might turn several of the sixteen- inch guns over to our telephone depart ment, to be used in shooting trouble; and to think of the delicious boarding-house steaks that could be made from all those saddle blankets, by adding a little o yesterday’s gravy; and the miles o barbed wire that could be cut up m six-inch lengths, flavored with dis water, rosin, and putty, to be ser\ed a noodle soup in our leading cafes. A caterpillar tractor, being the onO thing that will negotiate the MontgorneO County roads, would be handy * j in the products of that district, which believe consist chiefly of cuckle-bur p ne-tops, and hound dogs. j. Some of our friends are prone to on the Relief Department and other i ' stitutions that have been established their benefit. These might be repla with a few Army mules; they would K continually, and not have a hand as as a sun-cured ham extended for a P envelope on Saturday evening.
