THE FALLS DAM ON THE DAY OF THE CLOSURE
It was also agreed that the Govern
ing Board consist of Messrs. H. J.
Smith, T. A. Moormann, and C. R. Clay-
well, who will pass judgment on all
matters pertaining to the welfare of the
league, as well as disputes over games,
etc.
The company has rendered assistance
in the purchase of equipment, and
has put the grounds in first-class
shape. Soon the schedule of two games
per week will be under way. All the
departments expect to put forth strong
teams, and a hotly contested struggle
for the cup will result.
Yadkin Falls Development
The Yadkin Falls Development will
begin to deliver power to the Badin plant
for use in the potrooms and elsewhere
on March 1. At the present time, the
power-house is entirely constructed, and
all of the essential electrical and hy
draulic equipment is in place, so that
there is no doubt that the schedule as
originally made will be lived up to.
The Governor system, as furnished by
the Allis-Chalmers Company, is now
completely installed, and ready for opera
tion.
The oiling system, furnished by the
'Richardson-Phenix Company, is en
tirely installed, ready for operation.
The insides of the scroll cases, which
conduct the water from the intake to
the wheels, have been lined with gunite,
which is the product obtained by the use
of the cement gun.
On March 21, the final closure in the
dam was made, by dropping two large
timber gates, each of which weighed
about twenty tons, in guides in front of
rollway No. 1, which had been left open
in order to take normal flow of the river
while the rest of the dam was being
built. The closure was accomplished in
sixteen feet of water, without any un
toward incident. After placing the
closure gates, they were made tight by
the use of cinders and canvas rolled
down over the front of the gates, a
piece of pipe being used for the roller.
After cleaning up the old concrete sur
face, concreting operations in the rollway
were started and completed without in
cident in nine days.
The floodgates are now entirely erect
ed, and the hoisting mechanism is in
place, ready to operate. In fact, by the
time this issue goes to press, water will
be stored in the Yadkin Falls pond.
This pond is, of course, a mere baby
compared with the Narrows lake, as
the banks are precipitous thruout—the
stream channel between the Narrows and
the Falls being merely one continuous
gorge. Filling the pond is a very simple
matter, and takes only about twelve
hours.
Altho the plant will be placed in opera
tion May 1, there will still be a number
of weeks’ work to do in order to entirely
complete the construction.

Badinites in Charlotte
Quite a number of Badinites made the
trip over to Charlotte on Wednesday,
April If), to witness and add to the cele
bration in honor of the boys of the One
Hundred and Twentieth Regiment, fi
merly the Third Regiment North Cai

was the first to break thru the fame
Hindenburg line, which was said to
impossible to break. It was the sight ol
lifetime to see these noble fellows as th
marched along, every moment seemi
to bespeak the serious nature of t
business they had so well attended
When we remember that more than fo
hundred of their number made t
supreme sacrifice on the battlefields
France in defence of all that true m
hold dear—home, kindred, and honor
and that these brave fellows will sle
the sleep of the agres far away from th(
homeland, it makes all true manho
feel full of thoughts of kindness towar
those who have proved themselves
noble, and fills us with thankfulness
the God of us all who has given us sU'
manhood to save our country and
world in its hour of need. Not only
this regiment suffer the loss of
four hundred of its number who
killed outright; their total casual*’'
numbered over 1900.
